Talk to you instructor. They know you, we don't.

From the sound of things, you can't do what you want.

These sensors cannot see things and they cannot anticipate things. They are reactive.

Sensors are are basically on and off switches. With a enough of sensors, you can created conditions for a computer program to decide on the data these sensors supply.

It's not easy, and it evolves as you create by creating needed information to plug holes in your program.

Will it cost less and be more reliable than a walking stick?

This is a hardware AND software project. You need a computer interface and custom software, the Kinect sensors alone won't work by themselves.

Start by asking your lecturer for more advice, then research how the Kinect actually works. An internet search is a fantastic start because a quick one just now even gave me links to downloadable computer software that allows the kinect to be customised so it can be used as a navigational aid.

This is what I would consider a University-level complexity project (probably around a Degree level second year or higher) that you have apparently been given to do so one would assume the lecturers that gave it to you thought should have the hardware and programming skills to be able to at least attempt it, even as a learning experience.

I used an internet search of the word 'kinect' and the link sites were on the first page of results. For example.

https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/kinect/develop

A lot of this project will involve first learning about the Kinect hardware and programming, so you need to start there and train yourself up before you can start actually trying to build the final navigational aid and write the software.

Start at the beginning by learning about the hardware and software otherwise you will only get confused.
