Ex nA Motor in Hazardous Area

07/07/2016 5:48 AM

Ex nA by definition indicates that motor is non sparking in normal operating condition.

Normal condition is defined as full load condition.

However which condition for motor ( in zone 2) shall be considered as abnormal which shall cause a spark ( which in tern will be difficult to be installed in hazardous area)

The question is nonsense.

  • Zone 2 is where a flammable gas/air mixture is unlikely to occur in normal operation, and if it does occur it will be present only a short time.
  • Ex nA is suitable for Zone 2.
  • Therefore provided the gas group and temperature rating are compatible, the motor and the zone are also compatible.

End of.

u should not be called ur self as a guru,

question is not for asking definition or is motor compatible in zone 2 or not

please read properly , ur degree in electrical is in doubt ? u should retake electrical engineering.

what I am asking when they certify motor for ExnA, which abnormal condition they do not consider.

for u I am rephrasing ?

please forget this person and anser

If you want free advice then you shouldn't insult those who answer you.

Obviously you should not criticize people on their schooling. Please review your grammar on spelling and punctuation before you rebuke others for misunderstanding your words.

Read this and this, then, for educational completeness, as normality in this area has nothing to do with the motor.

To confine oneself to the topic of Electrical Engineering would lead to a somewhat blinkered view of the subject, as evidenced by the quality of remarks made in #2 above and any response thereto.

<...Normal condition is defined as full load condition....> Not in this context. Normal in ATEX terms is the normal containment of process materials. The Directive cannot deal with unforeseen circumstances such as a leaking, rusty pipe spilling flammables everywhere or, say, an aeroplane crashing onto the plant, for these things are abnormal in the context of equipment operation.

"...Ex nA by definition indicates that motor is non sparking in normal operating condition...", no it does not. What it does say in IS/IEC 60079-15, Section 4.2 Potential Ignition Sources:

"In Normal operation and in certain abnormal conditions specified by this standard, the apparatus shall not:

a) produce an operational arc or spark unless that arc or spark is prevented from causing ignition of of a surrounding explosive atmosphere by one of the methods described in Clauses 26 to 31..."

The key word is "prevented"; i.e., the equipment is designed to contain the arc/spark, not necessarily to prevent its occurrence, but to prevent its escape. In other words, the motor can spark under operational conditions, as long as those sparks do not reach the atmosphere outside the equipment, or vice-versa.

"...which abnormal condition they do not consider...", in other words you want to know if the standard covers all the unknown unknowns?! Thankfully the standard covers this by the use of the words "...certain abnormal conditions..." as stated in the preamble above.

One can only hope, for the sake of other CR4 readers who may well be in the vicinity of the installation when it is energised, that the original poster's reading skills are better than the writing skills displayed in #2 above, otherwise the help will be wasted....

What we have here is a failure to communicate.

As I expected, the reading skills are just as well refined as the writing skills. GIGO (That's a common acronym, son. You can look it up if you need to.)

Good Luck in your work. Try not to kill anyone. If your lucky you'll only embarrass yourself.

Having claimed in a personal message via CR4's personal messaging system that username PWSlack is the <...useless person in world...>, the additional claim here that username Redfred is also the <...most useless person on earth...> simply invokes the response that the probability that both statements are abstruse has risen quite sharply.

[The full text of the personal message received in PWSlack's inbox was:

<...dont come to my post, u useless person in world?

if u cant discuss technical, which i highly doubt ?...>

It's writing that other readers might find quite amusing, and is shared for the sport that might arise therefrom.]

If the post were aimed solely at motor manufacturers then one might venture to suggest that an anonymous on-line Engineering forum is the wrong place to search for an answer to the technicalities involved in the original post. Motor manufacturers are listed in regional and national telephone directories and an interpersonal approach by telephone would yield more information from an original-poster-validated source far more quickly than a wait for information via CR4 ever could.

A highly recommended tool, is the telephone. There are now so many of them in the world, it is amazing that they are not used more frequently.

Do you think someone should first give the "motor manufacturing industry" a heads-up about this incoming phone call?

One might ring round looking for volunteers, perhaps. However, on account of <...useless person in world...> claims, enthusiasm for the task is somewhat lacking here.
