Revolving Trolley

08/01/2016 3:21 PM

This should be laughable easy to answer, and I hope I am posting in the right forum.

Im gonna make a trolley that revolves around a pole, here is a video of the concept: http://sendvid.com/sc40swoh

Its the wheels Im worried about, I want them to be rigid and if put in the right angle, it should work right?

or will I have to buy wheels that are "free" like in a shopping cart?

Also, if rigid works, how do I go about calculating the angle of the wheels?

Thanks in advance!

Rigid casters should be fine. Align the axles of the wheels to be perpendicular to the center pole.

[edit] Rixter phrased it a little more clearly.

If the axles are fixed each wheel will need to be aligned individually. It might be simpler to use free casters.

That would allow the platform to wander every which way, totally defeating the purpose.

I don't think so. In the video the platform is firmly attached to the driving arm, so it will wander only round the circle. Each wheel is on a separate radius from the centre, so either 4 separate alignments must be undertaken or the wheels must be self aligning.

Aligning the wheels should be very easy. The axis through the axle needs to intersect the center of rotation of the driving arm.

You could also know the correct angle by measuring distance from platform centerline and distances to driving arm center of rotation.

Another alternative is to attach the casters with only one hole/fastener, then turn the platform and adjust each caster till it slides the least....which will locate the other holes needed to hold that alignment.

The video doesn't load.

Obviously, the wheel axles need to be aligned to intersect the pole.

As long as the wheels can turn independently, I don't see this as a problem...

The wheels will need to be on some sort of track....

I don't understand why someone rated your comment off topic.

It also seems kind of cruel to give the kid a mock steering mechanism.

The post was OT because 1) it didn't take account of the OP's video, which cleared up some things, and 2) guide tracks need not be required.

Your post is OT for similar reasons.

Fair enough.

What about your own post? I mean, as long as you are judiciously distributing OTs you shouldn't have to do without yourself. Don't neglect your own needs.

If you think you have to, go ahead and give me an OT. It won't be hard to figure out whodunit.

It might be more difficult to figure out than you realize.

.

Just to be sure I understand correctly, would it be correct to say that you are more vigilant about marking comments 'off topic' if you did not write the comment?

Not necessarily. I sometimes mark my own as OT.

You're right; now that three idiots have weighed in, it is impossible for me to tell which is chich.

I saw that too late to fix it. I can figure how I might hit an adjacent key, but two rows off is weird.

As already mentioned, the axles of the wheels need to be aimed directly at the stationary (but rotating) post, and the wheels must be rigid-mounted. Those who can't see the video will probably visualize the pivot as being centered in the platform, even though it is actually well off to the side.

Also, the wheels need to be free-spinning on the axles. If they are not, there will be slippage between the inside and outside wheels.

Already done; they are independent wheels all on separate axles.

Remove the bolt/axle on the wheel and replace with a long rod/axle that goes all the way to the pole. This assures the axle is radial. Jim
