Is Pokemon Go Safe?

08/10/2016 3:02 AM

I have no idea why we started thinking about this, but we started thinking of how dangerous Pokemon Go is. Please feel free to add to this list or if you want to comment, I'd like to hear.

1. Pokemon Go wastes valuable resources like gasoline (people drive to Pokemon Go sites).

2. Pokemon Go wastes electricity. More cell phone use = more charging time = more electricity usage. It would be interesting for someone to come up with a good estimate.

3. Pokemon Go puts people at risk of being robbed. Think about it. What if Pokemon Go sends someone to a bad neighborhood and since others have been walking around looking for creatures on their phone, it would be a sign for the thief to hang out there. What an easy target; someone staring at their phone as they walk around!

4. Pokemon Go is going to get someone shot. What if Pokemon Go thinks they're putting creatures in a field, when really it's inside someone's house! If the maps haven't been updated, a new house could've been built on the same spot.

5. Pokemon Go is going to cause fights. Most people don't like others bumping into them and it gets worse when a drunk is coming out of a bar.

6. Pokemon Go is wasting valuable time. How much time (cumulative) has been spent by all the players? Loss of productivity, etc.

7. Pokemon Go is causing traffic. People swarm to Pokemon Go sites, which puts more cars on the road and causes more traffic.

8. Pokemon Go is damaging cell phones. People are more apt to drop their cell phone when they are chasing a creature. Also, the extra use and more charging cycles is shortening the life of the battery.

9. Pokemon Go is stressing out the public transportation system. Many more people are using public transportation as they search for those creatures. The regular riders may be inconvenienced or may even miss their train/bus.

Last weekend we saw hundreds of people searching for Pokemon creatures. And this is in just a small part of Southern California. I wonder how many people are doing this in a congested city like Chicago or New York City?

I have no idea what Pokemon Go is.

But, your main concern/complaint seems to be that it's really popular.

Almost all of the problems you enumerate apply to anything which is popular.

Are you just being a killjoy?

Take a look at it first. It is very popular, which there's nothing wrong with that. It does get people out, which is okay too. It does cause people walk in public areas staring at their phones (more than normal) and hanging out in places that aren't too safe.

We were joking about what would happen if a tourist took his rental car (or the bus) to the wrong part of LA looking for Pokemon Go creatures. I remember hearing about German tourists who went to the Watts Towers to see what they were like - it was in their tourist guide. They wound up getting shot! Same as tourists going to the Santa Monica Pier and then to Venice - they walked down the boardwalk at night and when they were getting mugged, they were shot.

I grew up in Chicago and I can only imagine someone searching for Pokemon Go on the South Side!

Yes, they are and there's nothing wrong with that. You are aware that Pokemon Go can send you to a bad neighborhood and what if the creature is hiding behind a wall or building and there's a drug deal or gangs hanging out there. This is reality of big cities.

I think it's an excellent way to get people/kids walking and exercising more....

"More than two-thirds (68.8 percent) of adults are considered to be overweight or obese. More than one-third (35.7 percent) of adults are considered to be obese. More than 1 in 20 (6.3 percent) have extreme obesity. Almost 3 in 4 men (74 percent) are considered to be overweight or obese."

A commentator on our local public radio station wanted to dislike Pokemon Go, for some of the same reasons Autobroker listed. Then his teenage son told him about various local historical sites he'd visited in the process of playing the game. According to the dad, the son was excited to have "discovered" these places.

On the down side, a friend who lives in an historical neighborhood remarked that it's unnerving, to say the least, to have swarms of strangers walking around staring at her home while they're looking for whatever it is they're looking for.

I think that people need to be careful and also to be courteous to others. Last weekend we took a day trip to Ventura - a very nice beach community. Instead of enjoying the beautiful day at the beach, there were lots and lots of people walking on the boardwalk staring at their phone. They weren't paying attention to where they were going as they chased Pokemon Go characters around.

The next day, we went to Santa Ynez/Solvang and we didn't see anyone playing Pokemon Go. Afterward on the way home, we went to Carpinteria Beach - it's a nice quiet beach and it's really nice to walk on the beach at night. There were some people playing Pokemon Go at the park next to the beach, which was okay, but what got me upset was when a group of teenagers pulled up in their lifted Jeep Wrangler with super bright lights. Some of them went around looking for Pokemon Go characters, while the others hung out around the car, cranked the stereo and left the Jeep running with a loud exhaust and bright lights shining on the beautiful beach.

Carpinteria is a really nice beach town that seems to have got lost in the 1980's. It has such a cool atmosphere and teenagers with loud stereos and bright lights typically don't go there - unless they're searching for Pokemon Go!

One more point for Chicago.

I've not yet identified a person searching for a Pokemon much less hundreds on a given weekend.

Your region must be ripe with criminal activity.

..Anyone who goes in too deep with this P-G will be a beacon of wasted time and potential.

Imagine the advantage when giving an interview? it will be perfectly legal to ask about ones P-G activities.

If the subject gushes about their obsession with P-G or other things they should have stopped being infatuated with by the time they made it to middle school it will be very informative from an employers perspective when it comes to assigning who to what task, and who to pass on.

I grew up watching the original Star Wars trilogy unfold, but I don't dress like a wookie 4 times a year traveling to 'conventions'. Why is that relevant? Because the main players are in their 20's and defend their love for pokemon as "just something I grew up with"

BTW- Galaxy Quest (movie) - pretty hilarious

Popular craze or not. P-G is just the continuation of a misspent youth IMOHOWMTFPIMC

Now If you'll excuse me I'm off to play with my Fuzzy Pumper Barber Shop.

You've brought up some very serious issues.

The California chapter of The Thought Police will be coming around later today to discuss this with you.

We may even put you in charge, such is your vigour in rooting out these infernal dangers to society.

But be prepared for a tough interrogation.

This is a serious issue. I took my kids to the Detroit Zoo this weekend and not only were we warned at the front gate about playing it, also at every exhibit. It would seem that people have been playing it at the zoo and a bird was stepped on in the aviary and several butterflies in the butterfly garden. We were also told there have been multiple injuries with people falling over railings, tripping on curbs, wandering where they were not suppose to go, looking for these stupid things. We were warned about this game no less than a dozen times.

Can you imagine a tourist visiting Detroit and wandering into the wrong neighborhood while searching for Pokemon Go characters. Detroit has some really rough areas - similar to Chicago and Los Angeles.

1. The recreational boater you tell him he is wasting gas.

2. those trolling motor batteries on those bass boats consume a lot more electricity.

3.,4, 5 Only oneself puts them in a position to be harmed. Which goes for anything that distraction. The phone in itself is a distraction.

6. I guess you never wasted time on a hobby or some recreation.

7. sporting events, concerts, Forth of July fireworks displays all cause disruption in traffic. I guess next year we tell everyone no Independence Day Celebration. Might cause some traffic problems. Can't have that.

8. Cell Phone Manufactures like that!

9. Better they fill these buses and collect fares then my tax dollar pay for the service because they are not filled.

In a free society you can not dictate the use of a product unless you show it does harm to the society as a whole. As of yet that is not the case. And all the points you brought up I could name 100's products or events that do the same.

I could say that this post is doing point 6.

At least the little Johnny and Sally crowd will be spending more money at fast food places, and "plumping" up for the reaper. Playing that in traffic will get people dead, no doubt. Driving while stupid is already a prevelant disease around these parts.

Why pull out in the right lane that has no oncoming traffic when the middle lane pull out is "easier" and the other traffic will have to suddenly brake and dodge.

Of course, that has nothing to do with Pokemon Go, now does it?

I suppose small sectors of the economy will benefit, but it only makes the wealthy more wealthy.

Look at it this way: Pokemon Go is quite possibly the beginning of thinning the herd, and I don't mean creatures. It is like a reverse Darwin Award. You get the award for playing the game, and end up doing something worthy of a Darwin Championship Award. If folks want to endanger themselves playing this, ok go for it, but it's all fun and games until someone (like an innocent child or a mother or a father or a sister or a brother) gets hurt, maimed, or killed.

Here you go! Some kids in Missouri figured out how to take advantage of people playing Pokemon Go. I bet there will be many more stories like this coming up.

I'm surprised that so many here didn't see this coming.

One of the things I learned when living in Chicago was to always be aware of my surrounding and the people there. I grew up in a quiet suburb, but my parents and my friends parents always told us to be careful when we were in the city.

The popularity of the game brings to mind the premise of the story in the movie Kingsman. I can only hope Pokemon Go and Nintendo are more successful than Valentine was. I love diabolical plans.

Pokémon Go is an app for a smartphone. Seems harmless enough. Just like a car in the garage, no harm there. It is when irresponsible people use that car or app that problems start to occur. Of course it is safe if used responsibly.

I have noticed that a good many people at our work are talking and commenting about pokemon while at work, they even were on the company radio asking each other what level they were on. When I got on the radio and asked them what they were doing talking about this, using up the radio time and not working at the same time, is when it finaly stopped. they wasted my time for calling them out about it and the companys time for lost production. where will this stop???

I had questions about Pokemon Go so I downloaded it. I've lived in this small town for almost 30 years and found a historical area that I didn't know about. I then tried it while on a family trip through Oklahoma City at a restaurant. I 'found' a couple historical sites that I otherwise wouldn't have known about. I did capture a total of three Pokemon just to try the experience.

For me, the 'advertisement' of historical sites was interesting; however, I didn't fully play the game. I only looked for historical sites and then decided if it was worth the short side trips to actually see them (many I saw weren't).

I use past tense because after only using it those few times I deleted it. I found it was really too distracting for me. I would rather interact with family than find obscure sites not normally listed on tourist maps while staring at my phone.

Now, if there was an app that had the historical information presented without the game, I would go for that.

No...no...no, you go it all wrong. Pokemon Go saves valuable Government resources by leading people into FEMA camps, without having to use any Government resources to do it. All you'd have to do is open the gate, have their Pikachu lead them to their rooms and then close the door. A job well done.

That is if FEMA camps existed.

But it smells like ass. I understand the flavor is somewhere south of moldy onions, combined with cooked apricot. Served best with a white wine made from grapes suffering from 100% powdery mildew. This brings up a stewed dried tomato flavor that is totally unmistakable, and something the palate cannot untaste.

Honestly if they are having fun, have at it.

If they are willing to break into a house for a Pokemon then chances are they will be willing to break into a house for money so if they get shot that is one less potential burglar out there.

The only problem I have with it is people playing while on the road behind the wheel. If you want to play and maybe put yourself in danger so be it. Just don't put myself and others in serious danger because Pokemon is more important than paying attention.

Yeah, but first they have to stop sexting, texting, or just talking on their cell phones to play Pokemon Go while driving....

Like I said...it's all fun and games until someone shoots their own eye out.

Interesting.

Here's something else to consider: Criminals can now use the excuse that they were searching for Pokemon Go characters when in reality they're scoping out places to rob people or break in homes/businesses.

I liken Pokemon Go to wearing a cap backwards or wearing pants that hang so far off your a$$ that you have to use one hand to hold them up.

Both are really stupid ideas, but that doesn't seem to deter too many children from doing it.

Shhhh, Don't tell the criminals to stop wearing size 50 pants - if they think it's cool, let 'em. When they're running from the police, they have to hold their skirts up with one hand, which slows them down and gives the police a better chance of catching them!

Re: Is Pokemon Go Safe?

First off let me state I am not a user of Pokemon Go.

Inanimate objects are usually safe. It’s when people pick them up and choose to misuse them is where things go wrong.

Mankind has apparently been given the ability to make choices.

The opportunity to choose is freedom. No choice = no freedom.

Freedom does have risks but the alternative is slavery or worse.

Yes, one person’s choice of entertainment and how they use it can be another’s frustration. How do you entertain yourself? Could your entertainment be irritating to others? Do we want someone or some government to decide what’s allowed and what’s not, for us? Yes, there must be laws for regulation. We all seem to be flawed and make mistakes. So we do seem to need some fences to remind us. But to what degree do we want our lives regulated?

Maybe if we could all use wisdom, common sense, and regard for others all the time then we wouldn’t need so many laws. But alas, we fail.

Don’t look for things to take offense at. Choose no offense.

That can be hard when we look at what people are doing that encroaches upon our own life. We see people doing things that take away our perceived quality of life.

Love your neighbor? Not an easy task sometimes. We want to sit in judgement of others but we don’t want to be judged. Judge not ……

Mostly just preaching to myself! This kind of stuff trips me up.

It should have become (painfully?) obvious by now that (Pokemon-Go-type games) should be limited to being (played) only in off-road, relatively large, mostly open, relatively level, outdoor areas, from no earlier than 1 hour after sunrise, to no later than 1 hour before sunset, in places like New York City's Central Park, in order to better protect the Public from the players, and the players from the Public...

Alternatively, there could be a (world of Warcraft Pokemon Go) type of computer game that would be played only on actual desktops and laptops, but not on cell phones...

Considering that the ORIGINAL Pokemon games were for hand-held consoles, and were intended to encourage interaction between real people face to face (You had to connect two handhelds together by cable (later by short range 'wi-fi' or bluetooth style links) to trade critters or battle a non-NPC character), it seems counterintuative to make a version that chains the players to a fixed location. Modern computer games and Nth Gen consoles already do that.

The Pokemon Go app does not encourage kids to play this game outside the home, as it can have a chance of meeting an accident and getting injured.

Where as World of warcraft 60 tage kaufen gameplay and playing it in your own computer can give a peace of mind. I hope that gaming world should transform Pokemon Go gameplay as a World of Warcraft.

Continuing with some previously discussed ideas here -

Obviously the game and the increased amount of people going where they usually don't has lead to some instances of trouble. However, wouldn't increased amounts of people going to these 'unsafe' areas also potentially lead them to being more safe? Foot traffic brings potential for business, police would have to up their patrols to prevent future incidences, etc. Granted, it probably isn't the best way for things to happen - but in the long run, it seems to me that more people visiting disused areas would be beneficial.

Alternatively, it may simply teach people where they can buy the drugs they need to stay awake all night playing Pokemon Go...

Remember that these Pokemon Go players are clueless - they're roaming around looking at their phones trying to find a character that only shows up on their screen. They're oblivious to their surroundings, so how much safer is it to have a bunch hanging around people staring into their phones?

GA to you for thinking outside the box.

I also think that Pokemon Go is only the start of these types of games. I bet there are lots of people working on something similar.

Yes Pokemon go is getting too much popular and the game will soon break the Twitter in terms of daily users. Now the Pokemon Go is adopting different marketing techniques and can impact other industries like food and beverage. I believe that the local restaurant owners can make use of this opportunity to grow their business.

Yeah especially if all the Pokemon critters hide out in the middle of traffic! At least the undertakers will have a field day!

If the critters are in the middle of a bar, then underage persons will get the bar owner in trouble, but at least if they can do a chin up on the bar, beer sales might skyrocket.

The problem with nanny state versus technology is that there are not enough nannies to cover the entire population. Someone has to be remaining a full-grown mature, responsible adult.

If the critters end up in a fast food restaurant the Little Johnnies, may end so fat, they can't even roll out the door of the place when the critters skedaddle.

That reminds me of something I've heard from the DNC camp: They have agents using the came to find hotspots (or dropping in-game 'lures' to make a local hotspot) and then setting up Voter Registration Tables there. Sounds like a good way to capture the "hearts and minds" of the youth vote, who tend to vote Democrat, when they remember to/are motivated to vote.

In that case, Pokemon Go must be banned from America. Let them vote Democrat somewhere else. So there!

There's nothing stopping the GOP from trying the same tactic to 'win hearts and minds.'

Then again, the Republican plan seems to be more aligned with REDUCING the voter turnout than INCREASING it.

(Marked OT because politics.)

I am so done with attempting to convince "winners" about how to get sufficient knowledge to be an informed voters. I consider most people, including most all of my female siblings that vote Democrat to be irredeemable dumb-bunnies, dingbats, or just plain suicidal on a societal basis. Usually people such as that do not allow politcal (or religious) discussion, because it interferes with how they feel about their "lifestyle" choices.

I am old enough now, I really don't give a damn about being politically correct. I just want my government to hold up its end of the damned bargain here. We invest our time, lives, money, and the next generation in this country for what again? What is supposed to be the return on our investment of blood, sweat, and tears? Give it all to Big Brother Government, so it can be handed out to people that would just as soon murder you as look at you, that system can go straight to hell.

Re: Is Pokemon Go Safe?

Safety of Pokemon go- this is a good topic and has scope for a great discussion. in my opinion, players should always be vigilant about their surrounding. Trespassing private properties may cause physical injury or sometimes leads to death. I had gone through a news headline about firing at Poke-players due to trespassing restricted premises. One thing good about the Pokemon Go is that now I can see many kids in parks and open space :) I think they lost interest in those violent video games.
In the business point of view going with Pokemon trend is useful .
Here I have a friend running restaurant business, He got Gym at his restaurant and now his business is booming. He is proving free Wifi connectivity and Power bank charging facility to Poke-players in his restaurant. Most of the local players are always in his restaurant and he got a good mileage than his competitors in the city. This article discusses marketing using Pokemon Go http://www.troimail.com/blog/mailing-service/how-the-pokemon-world-incorporates-the-power-of-direct-mail-solutions/
Hackers are also making use of Pokemon Go trend and targeting massive number of users, From the Beeping computers blog I read an article saying that some hackers from Middle East had developed some third party software associated with Pokemon Go, by which they can install some Ransomware on victims mobile device.

Don't get yourself in a twist, Tornado, give the guy the benefit of the doubt.

There's a good chance he was using the sarcastic tone of that phrase:

"What's/Who's X?" (where X is something/someone known in popular culture, or talked about in detail so that the uninitiated would understand who/what X is) = "I do not give a toss about X, I have more important things to do."

Thank you.

People tell me I'm funny, then I remind them that looks are only skin deep.

(Feels so good to be able to carry on without politics rearing up. After all, to quote Giacomo from that Danny Kaye movie(1), "A jester unemployed is nobody's fool.")

Notes:

  1. Since the movie is titled after "Giacomo's" profession, stating it there would spoil the punchline(2).
  2. And remember; The vessel with the pestle is the potion with the poison, the chalice from the palace holds the brew that is true..
