Which Toggle Switch Would You Choose?

08/10/2016 2:27 PM

I decided to open up some of the toggle switches I had in stock. I'm guessing everyone will agree that the NKK is the highest quality of the bunch but which would you say is second best? Best value? Any DPDT 20A switches around the $5-8 mark you would recommend instead?

The Carling copper rocker and rivets are thinnest and uncoated (maybe because 15A instead of 20A rating). The Eaton seems well made except for the spring loaded toggle switch instead of the spring loaded selector pins like the others use. The no-name switch honestly seems okay but could use more lube.

You should be able to view a high resolution version by clicking on the image.

NKK, Japan, 20A, $7.80

Carling, Mexico, 15A, $4.90

Eaton, China, 20A, $5.20

No name, China, 20A, $3.75

It's hard to tell without the specs...the best one, is the best one for the job...If you're comparing a switch with a 10k cycle design or a 40k cycle design, it's going to make a difference....so you must decide what the design life will be, what is the expected cycle est. for that time, how protected is the power supply feeding the switch...etc.

Given your complete lack of any meaningful information, any of them will be just fine.

Instead of one NKK, buy two no-name China and furnish a spare.

Seriously depends on the application and how many times it is going to be switched.

We need a blown-up side view of the contact scene for each switch.

The one you want is the most reliable at the lowest cost...or just go with the NKK if it meets your specs.

From what I can see I like the NKK for the screw together design and I like No-name china for the snap together design. The others all look compromised in some way and likely to come apart after service.

I notice that the NKK and Eaton have plating on the parts.

If you are using the item in a home, occupied year round, the other ones may last just as well.

On the other hand if the switch is in a boathouse next to the sea, the plating may be vital.

If the switch is on an equipment costing thousands, 2$ saved on the on-off switch could be a false economy - any fault may cost the customer far more.

Differences like materials (especially contacts) and the tolerances on manufacture will be difficult to see, but would be vital to a reliable, long life - in any environment -from every switch you use.

As others have written, differences in the spec., like environment or number of operations or inductance switching will indicate reasons for price difference.

I would vote for the Eaton as "second best".

Based on the design and construction, I'd say NKK, Eaton, Carling and No Name China.

NKK has screws to hold the cover on - a plus

Eaton has a better rocker (looks better) and the cover has arms that go to the other side of the switch

Carling has a similar frame, but the rocker looks cheaper than the Eaton.

No Name China cover looks cheap and the side clips don't look very sturdy.
