Tyvek® might be a good material for this.

Back years ago I can recall some bags of portland cement having a wax paper liner in them. Now they just use a plastic liner.

it would most likely be a multi-lined bag. And water-resistant, not water-proof.

The problem with biodegradable bags, is just that, they degrade...not something you want to happen with cement...

I didn't look at the link, but that plastic sounds like a corn based product.

I believe the UK had something like this for the grocery stores.

You always find a use for this plastic bags. You store things in it and put it up in your attic... in 2-3 years you go and get it, and the bag is in pieces.

If you leave those totes in the sun, they fall apart too. Don't ask me how I know!!!

For our community clean up day, we pick up trash on the side of the roads here in our town. If the plastic grocery bags have been out too long, they disintegrate in your hands. It's definitely biodegradable!

I think it would be a mistake to use this for bags of cement. If the bags sit in the sun (on the job site or at the store), they will fall apart and make a big mess.

I'd make a few phone calls to cement bagging operations but then I'm funny that way.

Perhaps he is a cement bagging operation somewhere, and his product is showing up on job sites in the region, already monolithic!

I strongly urge the OP to follow some of the links, do his own searching for new bagging technology that will not only stop liquid water from entering, but also not allow the bag to breath in moisture from hot, humid air. Either that or start shipping in bulk containers that are sealed.

I think the idea of using 25 L (slightly less than 1 cubic foot) of HDPE, with sealed lids is a great idea. The locals can then turn around and use the left over containers for storage of dry goods, food items, carry water, etc. This stuff is not trash, it is use me over and over and over until I fall apart stuff.

Yes, I think better recyclable and/or reusable, than biodegradable....might kick up the initial price a bit...but containers are easily sold...5 gal 19L $3 Earth friendly regrind plastic...

If the pails come back in the same condition as the cement mixer does when you let your neighbor borrow it, its not worth it.

I have had tried to use 4 ply paper bag. It was plastic laminated also. However the concept is not good as when you pack the cement in it which contains air also. you have to make small holes to escape the air. When the cement packer release the bag it falls on conveyor belt then ahead to truck....

I estimated 25 % of torn paper bag during handling it.

Have you determined where most of the breakage occurs?

Perhaps the bag should not "drop" onto a conveyor, but be placed there instead?

Or reduce the height of the drop to a minimum,or provide a slide chute for the transition.

Examine a competitor's bag structure to gain insight into how it is done.

Packaging is what adds costs to product. How deep is your budget.

In the mean time, maybe address the handling issue. Handling cement is not an easy issue.

Since you are obviously new to the field of engineering,I suggest you get more

experience in using the available resources, such as Google to search for items.

Knowing where to find something is second only to knowing it first hand.

TAPPI (Technical Association of the Pulp & Paper Industry) will have some information on paper with wet strength additives for water resistance, required tensile strengths for the contents, and perhaps meet your needs at the most economical price point.

http://www.tappi.org/

Bosch Packaging Technology, Waiblingen, Germany, and BillerudKorsnäs, Sweden, have developed the world´s first Sealed Paper Packaging. Instead of using polymer film, a new solution enables production of dust tight packaging for dry products such as sugar, grains, flour, or powders using sustainable mono-material paper, which contains no additional polymer fractions. As a result, retailers and consumers profit from clean shelves, high product protection, and improved product quality.
