Determining a Motor Frame Size & Phase

08/19/2016 11:16 AM

This is a two part question.

1. Is there a method used to determine the frame size of an electric motor if the distributor of such motor does not provide this information beforehand ?

2. Is there a method of determining how many phase's a motor has ?

In the first question, I know who the distributor is, but the distributor cannot or will not provide the name of the manufacturer. If I knew the name of the manufacturer, I could look for a website to view their products line.

In the second question, the only reference item I have available is a basic circuit wiring diagram.

If you need more information to answer these questions, I will provide everthing I can or know.

The diagram will show 3 distinct leads to the motor from outside if 3PH...in spite of having multiple wires coming from windings of of the motor itself. You might see lines labeled L1, L2, and L3 for instance.

I suppose this motor was sitting around on a shop floor somewhere, and not connected to anything?

Take some careful measurements of motor length, and diameter(s), shaft size, type of key way, etc. You may need those later on for side-by-side comparison with what else is out there. If it has heat fins, it is likely 3Ph, and over 1 HP.

If you are in North America... I would tell the distributor to come pick-up his motor. It is illegal to sell any electrical equipment in NA not marked to indicate all of the required information on the device and yes, the name of the manufacturer is most assuredly one of the things required to be marked.

I am willing to bet the same holds true in most portions of the world as well.

I'll give you a GA on that. There should be a name plate on the motor which is supposed to give you all the information on the motor. Exceptions would only be a used motor which has had the name plate removed (stay away from those) or a custom made motor, which are usually rather large and purpose built.

Besides identifying the number of phases you have, there is the additional problem of knowing what type of motor you have. There are Three phase induction and stepping motors out there.

It sounds like the only thing this motor and distributor is good for is ballast in a ship.

Frame designation...

http://ecmweb.com/content/key-figuring-right-frame-size

http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/nema-electrical-motor-frame-dimensions-d_1504.html

Three phase is going to have 3 power-in leads...single phase just 2...

NEMA frame sizes.

NEMA Chart 8.5x11 - Baldor.com

I agree, get a new supplier.

Yeah, it will make one heck of a boat anchor. Probably too heavy for fishing weights.

Re: Determining a Motor Frame Size & Phase

I said I would provide more information.

1. This motor is installed in the master cool MCP 44. I have not disassembled this motor to reveal is inner workings, so I can only describe how the motor appears externally. There are 5 lead in wires, black, red, blue, yellow, white. Yellow is ground, white is neutral. Two brown wires protrude out of the motors rear case and are wired directly to the case mounted capacitor. This is a teao motor. This is a 3 speed motor. The case of the motor is a split case design, 4 through hole bolts hold the case ends together. The front bell is where the output shaft is located. The rear bell has four cast in place mounting arms. There is a gap between the two halves, where can be seen the laminated plates of the stator. On the rear of the motor is mounted a capacitor, it is oval in shape, markings indicate : CBB65, 25 microfarads, 250v Ac 50/60 Hz

The motor does operate, although it does have an issue, on speeds 1&2 the motor runs normally, on speed 3, there is an acute vibration, this can be seen when the output shaft rotates and is exaggerated when the axial fan is mounted ( I thought the vibration was because the rubber grommets at the end of the mounting ears were worn, even though I replaced them the vibration continued ) and the cooler is run on high ( 3rd speed ).

There are no external markings on the motor except for a decal that reads : 11318PM 72254

Before I continue, let me say over the past year I have replaced several of these motors in these coolers, with five of them being the vibration issue. Now I like to make business and I don't have any qualms about making money but I am looking for a better designed replacement motor that I can use that is competitivly priced and can be used in the application.

I also have a motor that i got out of a first generation bon Aire Durango. It also is a 3 speed motor. Both the Durango & the mcp 44 motor are roughly the same size. Although there are some differences.

The bon Aire motor is a teao motor, the case of the motor is a cylindrical shell, a flat plate covers the rear, a flat plate covers the front where the output shaft protrudes, mounting brackets are spot welded to the case, there are 7 wires in the harness, red,white,orange,black,blue,gray,green-light green striped.

The green striped is ground, black, orange, gray are motor speeds 1,2,3, respectively, white, red are for capacitor.

The motor has a manufacturer decal: part #YDK 250L64023-01 , Zhongshan broad ocean motor co. , 110 v, 60hz, 3.5amp, 250w. Sp ph1 cap 15uF/370v. The cap is external mounted as part of wire harness, not attached to rear of motor. This motor operates normally - there are no vibration issues.

It would be nice if I could use this motor, or one like it ( bon Aire ) in place of the master cool motor.

I would then need to configure or source a mounting bracket. I realize there would be other considerations to work out.

So, this motor is out of a piece of equipment. I got the impression from your OP that you bought a motor from a distributor that had nothing marked on it. Now that we know this motor was inside a particular piece of equipment, call the maker of the equipment for the data you require.

He said he did call the distributor. They refused to supply answers. Hence the problem.

Agreed... but he did not tell us this was a motor from a piece of packaged equipment. If he had of done that from the beginning...

Yeah, doesn't sound like a NEMA frame, sounds like some sort of custom OEM motor.

A1) Just pick up the phone, and ask the distributor.

A2) Either one or three, depending on the application.

1) If the motor has a capacitor, it likely will be a one phase motor.

2) It is normal that 1 phase motor vibrate more than 3 phase motors, due to the elliptical magnetic rotating field.

3) Why not using a 3 phase motor with a frequency drive on a 1 phase feeding line? I suppose the rating of the motor is rather small (less than 2 or 3 HP)
