This has been featured before on CR4, including quite recently in comparison to China's Three Gorges ship lift.

Where I grew up, we had lift locks on the river at the hydroelectric dam, but I've never seen anything like this!

Dropped by to see the Wheel in operation on the way back from a service trip in Scotland a few years ago. Sadly I didn't have a camera with me.

Fascinating to see and watch in action (and the visitor's center wasn't too bad IIRC).

The energy consumed by the Falkirk Wheel is staggering low.

The company that built it, Butterley Engineering did a lot of work for companies I’ve worked for.

Just shows we can get some things right

I would suppose it wouldn't need too much energy if it is transporting boats down.

I am wondering if they have any trouble with the water leaking...

I was wondering the same thing with the seals on the gates...

"I would suppose it wouldn't need too much energy if it is transporting boats down" - up or down doesn't matter - each boat displaces it's own weight in water, so the sides are always balanced.

Another one worth a watch, the Anderton boat lift.
