Hi Sam48013,

Do you mean a comparison between Mechanical Engineering and Automation Engineering?

In terms of Quality of life, Salary, ease of access, etc?

Nah I am actually planning to do masters in mechanical engineering from canada and most of the universities here offer master degree in mechanical engineering with specialization in automation so I just wanted to know how is the scope for mechanical engineering with specialization in automation and control

That's a somewhat different question. Having more info makes it easier to know how to answer. I'm not an engineer so I have no advice, other than not to go into a field that doesn't interest you.

I read an interesting article on Engineering 360 this week, about a mechanical engineer who's using ME principles to model brain cancer cells. I would never in a million years have expected to find a mechanical engineer studying human cancer cells. There's a different career path for you!

Don't universities still have catalogs - the things that have the curriculum and class offerings? Probably on-line these days, I bet. And advisors that can tell you what's required and what's optional? Do you know what you want to do the rest of your life? Hopefully, your undergrad program taught you the foundational basics that will apply to whatever you do. I dare say that, 20 to 40 years from now, those basics and the experience you gain will be worth more to you than the specific training you receive in college.

It is always a better plan to study basic mechanical engineering first rather than study for a specialized area. Reason being; you are limiting yourself to one specialization while the basics will open many areas.

There are both practical and personal elements to your question; but, I would suggest that you take time to think to think about what truly interests you and investigate those alternatives. In other words, focus on what your interest is and not where it is conveniently available.
