When clearing an attic, I found the following object. Does anyone know what this is and what it was used.
It is a cylindrical brass cylinder on which a lid sits. The lid is fixed with a spring on the cylinder.
In the cylinder are 7 cavities in which a permanent magnet rod is placed.
There are six small magnets and one larger magnet. The magnets poles are painted red and blue.
Judging from the shape of the magnets, these are likely to be of a type of cast steel. And they were afterwards cut to the correct length. The rod length is exactly 2.5 inches.
The machined surfaces of the brass cylinder as casing outer diameter casing (1 ½ "), support outer diameter (2 ¼") and lid bore (1 ¼ ") appear to be inch sizes, this makes me suspect that the subject is of English or American make.
At the bottom of the cylinder is a logo imprinted it is an oval with RGW as inscription.
Curiously, the base of the cylinder is equipped with four holes to screw the whole on to something. The holes are countersunk 90 °, suggesting that the spring in order to hold the lid, is in the way when mounting.
The object is probably 70-80 years old. The white and yellow measuring rod is in cm. Probably the subject later is painted red.
In annex some pictures.
