Electronically Tinting Glass

11/28/2016 11:14 AM

I work in a building where I get a LOT of sunshine. It beats working in the dark but the brightness can be overwhelming and the room can get very hot by mid-afternoon. While window shades and plastic films can make a difference, I saw an article on windows that can be tinted with electricity. SageGlass and View are mentioned as suppliers but their products seem to require replacing the whole window (and, of course, I don't own the building!).

Is there a simpler product that can be installed similar to a window shade and removed when I move on? Also, I don't know if these windows are really clear or not but I'd rather not ruin the view at sunset.

that will be expensive. But technology and prices is coming down. There may be a flexible screen available.

I worked at a company that called these privacy screens. When there are windows installed in a conference room. They were electrically controlled when you flip a switch, an electric current running through the window and darkens/cloud them over.

This was back in the early 90's. I briefly looked on their site but I didn't find anything.

Most shades I see are motorized, but this one looks like what you are looking for. I have no idea what the price would be.

Here's an example of a static cling film that blocks a lot of sunlight, but still allows viewing through the window:

You should also take a look at the huge line of films that 3M makes. They carry a wide range of films with reflective coatings, diffuser patterns, privacy patterns, etc, including their louver film often used as a privacy screen on laptops.

I've worked in a couple of buildings with anti-glare film on the windows. The film does reduce light levels & glare but the energy in that sunlight has to go somewhere & ends up heating the glass. If you have to sit close to the window it can be like having a small radiator that you can't regulate.

The best solution I have experienced is to have external Venetian style blinds, probably not an option for the O.P.

That is an excellent option, as the reflectivity of these films will reduce radiant power to the room. We put some of these on some north facing windows at our house, just because we felt that folks could see into our kitchen at night too easily when blinds were still open.

Does it work? Have you found a window tint that allows you to see out in daylight, but does not allow a similar view in at night when your interior lights are on (dark outside and blinds open)?

Some sort of vertical blinds are the most abundant here in Florida....they can be manual or motorized, touch or remote controlled...I have them on all my windows and glass doors....
