6.6-kV 1300-kW VPI HT Motor Failure

12/31/2016 12:51 AM

We have installed 1300 kW, 1400 RPM, 6.6 kV motor, manufactured in the year 2010 was installed in our plant. This motor has failed recently. The B Phase winding has puncthured in Two bars in the winding slot.

Please advice me to go ahead with repairs

1. whether to go for Full winding replacement as it is a VPI motor and it requires for VPI process.

OR

2. To get the entire winding replaced by RESIN RICH WINDINGS which is cheaper.

3. Experts, Please suggest me the best possible way to repair the motor as per the present trends for repairing of HT Motors.

They have not responded properly. This has Class "F" Insulation.

Please explain how the motor manufacturer is unable to respond to telephone calls?

One receives instant gratification [although often incorrect, if not lethal] from the internet.

The telephone requires patience, and even sufficient information for an informed response, that most have lost.

Even remotely engaging in a person to person interchange has fallen out of vogue.

I cannot indicate how to repair it. It depends also on your budgetary possibility.

In my opinion, you have to keep at least the insulation class.

However, one has to check the cause of the failure and eliminate it-if possibly

A spike of a transient voltage or overloading or else.

If the insulation was good for 6 years it is hard to say it is a manufacturing defect involved.

Why did it fail?

What does the manufacturer recommend?

If you want the motor to last as long as a new one, go with option #1.

Replace the bearings also.

Dear Mr. AnandanCR,

In my opinion - you have to send the motor to the Manufacturer and the particular bar (where it has failed) in the stator and adjacent bars have to be removed and re-do the job, and test the motor.

We have done this type of repair some time back and it worked nicely

Whether it is free of cost or chargeable is a commercial matter to be discussed and decided by you.
