Should CR4 Have a "Social Science" Section?

08/13/2007 5:37 AM

I would like to propose a new section titled Social Science

I think people might enjoy an outlet for discussion of topics that are social in nature .

I think cr4 brings a good cross section of intelligent people together that makes for a lively and intellectual discussion of topics .

This section might offer a break from the daily grind and help to separate pure science issues for those who prefer hard science topics

The relevant material can already be done under General.

The issues (social, political, religious etc ) will bring about a really heated debate (to the point of war or rebellion) from which no conclusion will or can emerge.

The circumstances of peoples are too different.

Viva la difference!!!!

I vote for a NO!

Beat me to it Hendrik!

...Hows the arm?

My knee is better now...but Mrs Cat got me moving stuff in the garden and now I've graunched the other hip!

She wouldn't believe me when I said there were too many rocks in the crate...

(Mind she never believes anything I say....that's why I come on here! The bliss when someone says 'Del's right' !!! )

Social gossip - under general.

The arm is fine - still in plaster - I forgot the date when it can be removed.

The wifes leg is not healed yet - she now has torn the mussels in the shoulder because of the crutches - It is about time fore a trade in - Two 30 year olds will do.

3 x 20 years would be rough.

CR4 is the forum of Engineers!!
'Social Science' already finds provision under existing "General" section of CR4..Why to create more divisions / sections in CR4 family?

It has been my experience that any issue that is not encompassed by pure science has met with opposition as being outside that finite envelope .

Therefore I thought this would be a way of giving that gray zone a place so as not to conflict with those that are only interested in specific issues.

If it is appropriate to use general discussion why are there so many negative comments suggesting gray area, posts are inappropriate .

I am only searching for a solution to create a more harmonious atmosphere and value the opinions of others on this matter .

what about calling it 'off topic' instead of social science.. since the section would mostly be about things that might be non-engineering in nature.

I do agree though, off topic debates (depending on subject) could get quite heated..

I would have thought you might have got away with it, traditional, if you had proposed Social Engineering .

I'm easy, virtual wars are far better than the real thing.

I had thought general discussion would have covered it but from some of the responses posted to general discussions have lambasted non "science" views.

I thought it might be a better alternative to give it a title .

Just an idea I suppose I'm not a Guru so what would I know .

I vote NO!

There are plenty of blogs, that one can find to express their ideas about social issues.

A resounding NO!

Traditional,

I think you and some others provide enough opinion of a "social" and "political" nature to keep us all "broken from the daily grind". I engage in this forum because it is oriented to engineering and I find it interesting to hear all opinions and inputs, yours as well, (but especially those of that pesky Mr. Cat).

How about a section on ethics? There are many of us engaged in actions that have a varity of repercussions of all sorts; to industry, environment and society.

Sane sir! If sane is defined as 'the majority is always sane', then I gladly claim to be as mad as a barrel full of monkeys!

Its all the same thing my friend , just semantics

social ,political ,ethical its important to include the facts .

I get the impression engineers like to focus ,on their reality only, excluding anything else.

I think you are wrong. I would not bring up a question here that I might pose in another forum or I might have my own blog which I bring up social, religious or political issues. I think that some questions can bring up some philosophical approaches or musings, such as one discussion, Is western math missing something? I do not see a problem when the discussion naturally ventures into social science.
