Super Bowl Light Riddle

01/26/2017 3:52 PM

On February 5th, 2017, the Atlanta Falcons will take on the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI (51 for all you non-Romans). Inspired by these teams, and also by what might have been (Sorry Packer Fans), I have the following question:

On February 5th, 2017, the Sun will set in Atlanta, Georgia at 6:13 pm EST, and at 5:04 pm EST in Foxboro, Massachusetts. What's interesting to me is the Sun will set on that same day in Green Bay at 6:07 pm EST (5:07 CST).

So this means that the sunset in Atlanta will be more than an hour after the sunset in Foxboro, yet only 6 minutes after the sunset in Green Bay (which is west of Atlanta). What's going on?

The path of the sun during the winter is nearly aligned with Georgia and Massachusetts in the evening, and nearly equidistant with Wisconsin and Georgia....

Notice the daylight/darkness is not vertical, so points due north have earlier sunsets and later sunrises. (North-South is vertical in this map projection.) But that should be obvious because in the winter days are shorter farther north.

Well, there you go again Lyn, with your lame Snowflake political statements.

Get over it for the next 4 years and possibly 8 years, because Trump won the Election and is the President. If you don't like it, then move to North Korea or some similar hell hole.

We "Deplorables" put up with Emperor Barry and Killery and their crappola agendas, narratives, and policies for a long long 8 years.

Seriously Lyn, I'm a real hoot alright, and its not borne from hate, unlike your repetitive political rantings that keep popping up time and again, which bear no relevance to the subject matter at hand.

I tell it as I see it. Get over it.

And just in case you have foggy brain, political rants are forbidden in CR4. I thought that I'd remind you of that.

But, you just can't control yourself, can you? Keep it up and I'll personally see that I file a complaint with the forum Moderators PDQ.

It is noticeable, particularly during the winter months:

  • An Engineer resident in East Anglia and commuting weekly to Weston-Super-Mare will experience a 12 minute shift in the time of dawn and dusk relative to the home location during the week, due entirely to the difference in longitude between those places.

It's due to global slowing. The rotation of the earth is slowing down, and it's settled science that it is due to man made global slowing. So countermeasures need to be taken, if not voluntarily, then by government mandate. Among the things we can do are the following:

1) When traveling, get to your destination by going primarily in a north or south direction.

2) When you do need to go east-west, accelerate HARD when heading east, and softly when heading west.

3) Population migration needs to occur towards the north and south poles. All mining of deep and disproportionately dense materials like gold and lead must be stopped. Dense materials must be left deep, or holes dug, and them placed even deeper.

4) New power grids and all other electrical circuits must be aligned and operated so that the induced magnetic fields co-act with the Earth's magnetic field to counter the global slowing.

If we implement these simple practices, computer models prove that global slowing can be reduced by 14 second over the next 30 years. We must all do our part. I challenge our members to identify other countermeasures that we can do to stop global slowing.

"I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment.... when the rotation of the earth began to speed up and our planet began to heal..."

In the winter, the north pole of the earth is facing away from the sun. The terminator or day/night boundary, therefore, runs northeast to southwest.

Terminator (red dotted vertical line on the left) runs northeast to southwest in wintertime.

What!?!? I thought the Stupor Bowl was going to be on Long Island, not in Rome.

As far as light, I only care about when the lights go out on Broadway.

Go Jets.
