The common assumption is that people who troll are different from the rest of us, giving us the freedom to dismiss them and their behavior. But a new study suggests otherwise—under the right circumstances, anyone can become a troll. “We wanted to understand why trolling is so prevalent today,” says Justin Cheng, a computer science researcher at Stanford University and lead author of the new paper. “While the common knowledge is that trolls are particularly sociopathic individuals that occasionally appear in conversations, is it really just these people who are trolling others?”"

	Crows actually are rather friendly. Neighbor of ours had one, he caught a younger one and then him into a pet. Pest actually. he would ride his bike with the crow perched on the handle bars with its wings spread like some sort of hood ornament. 	I like the part when the dog looks back the crow is suddenly studying the ground, haha, then when the dog decides it's nothing to be concerned about, the crow attacks and catches the dog completely off guard....still the dog must outweigh the crow by a considerable amount and could easily chase the crow away..... __________________ All living things seek to control their own destiny....this is the purpose of life

	Some people can become 'trolls' in response to other 'trolls'. When there is a lack of balance in an on-line dialog, some will feel the need speak out to put the balance back into the discussion. In some cases, the original posting is so blatantly biased, readers feel compelled to point out whatever inconsistencies, or omissions, or slanting is there, and then the 'battle' ensues between the two camps. No different now than it was in the eighteenth century except for the speed in which the dialog occurs.

	Well.... for my part I find you quite likeable albeit a bit annoying at times, but sometimes aren't we all? There is only one person on this forum whom I would consider a troll, and a nasty one at that and, no, you're not him (don't ask). Fortunately he doesn't comment very often.

	I think the leverage in growing old is good conversation. Sometimes, it does not necessarily mean good all through. We appreciate hot and spicy conversation sometimes. Most men here, literally know when I'll say, when your wife or girl friends nags you at times. The inevitable happens next to that. Oh, it works 100% every time she does that. Now, that's what I mean by a good conversation, actually.

	It is the lack of personal contact. It is very easy to be nasty with someone you will never have to come any closer to than an internet connection from your keyboard. Add to this the mental image one forms of the person on the other end, concerning more than appearance, but beliefs and desires. 	I have a hard time grasping this internet bullying concept, as a victim of physical up close and personal bullying. There were 5 kids similar to Farkus in the Christmas Story in my neighborhood. With standard bullying back in the days of my youth, the emotional reaction was what they were looking for, especially if it was an expression of pain. At least you can turn the computer/phone off and get away, and physical pain is not involved. I used to hide in my attic everyday after school until I grew to be bigger than the bullies. I couldn't just lock myself in the house or I would pay for that the next time they found me. I grasp the Farkus concept more readily. 	the emotional reaction was what they were looking for, Most due to establishing a social pecking order. And from experience, bully's only attack quiet introverts. Standard bullying back in the day can last quite some time and then turn physical quite fast. And in the end it was or could be an equalizer. For me, when I was a freshman it was during Phy. Ed. intermural wrestling. at a 130-140#ish, I was put up against a 185# Senior. That brought a lot of laughs. Needless to say, the wrestling match turn quite physical quickly, and it was over when the senior was left bawling on the mat like a little girl. I actually felt sorry for the poor bastard and helped him up. But things got real quite after when I returned to the mat and said "Next". The bullying not only stopped personally for me, it stopped at the school period. 	Nice. The thugs of this world, they do have it coming to them, whatever it might be. I have always had a high disregard for anyone that takes cheap shots at someone out of the blue, with no enmity previously between them, no real motive, other than being a thug, they attack the innocent. 	Well, in grade school and middle school, I was the local Sheldon Cooper - learning was everything - guess that was the problem. I finally learned to not wait but attack first, and then took time away from books and took my pent up anger to the football field. 	that was one thing I've found... even from my example, I don't ever wanted to do it again, because the only thing I had going was surprise. And I went all in. What I mentioned before about it sucks, was that every underdog looked at me for protecting or standing up for them... which I initially did... the sucky part. as I was standing up for them, when I looked back, they were gone. And it was just me. Then what was called diplomacy, I didn't know what it was called at the time, .... I used the adage... "that I can only guarantee one thing, it's not going to be a party." That alone was enough. And with the internet as well as telephones... is different for the reasons you mentioned earlier. Here's a little tidbit.... That guy I talked about earlier,... 	Yeah - I grew up size wise early, but developed muscles late, and definitely grew bigger than the bullies. Wish I knew then what I know now, after years of searching for the right venue for my build. Turns out I'm all legs with no strength in my top half. If I'd known that back then, I'd have kicked them to the ground. 	In my 11th year at high school I was the New Kid and invariably the school bully challenged me after school, his minions and other kids in attendance to see the 'action.' But instead of fighting him I invited him over to our house for dinner. He had it all scripted out in his head how it was going to go. My offer was the very last thing he expected to hear. The look on his face was priceless. "Well? Are you coming or not? Dinner's at six." "Well, um... I ...I... can't." And that was that.

	He wasn't held in as high esteem by his 'homies' either. You could tell by the looks on their faces. Don't recall that he did much bullying after that.

	Off topic, but I've been watching PBS lately. they have a series where they plant a spy camera amongst animated animals or inanimated objects to get close to the animals. 	Personally I would have to say that about half the trolling flare ups I have seen and been apart of started out from one person misreading what someone else posted then trying to call them out on something that never happened only to then make an ass of themself for their own efforts. The rest tend to come from someone posting something they think is true but yet is either quickly shown to be far from true (making them look like a big dummy or worse over their obviously wrong belief) or to have it shown to be far more than just a binary definition of Right/Wrong, Good/Bad and so on. Contrary to what some insist, science is not a democracy so thusly just because a large number of people believe something to be true (and go into screaming fits trying to force it to look true) that in itself does not actually make it true.
