Less Than 10k Home

03/30/2017 9:00 PM

3D printed house. I this saw this story in the march edition of new equipment digest. The story was written by John Hitch.

The story is lengthy, so I will pull a few sentences from it. I didn't not contact the author.

A San Francisco based company ( Apis Cor ) built a home outside of Moscow, the cost was $10,000. or $223/ m2. The system used was a non-pla unit, that lays down concrete.

The story doesn't say if electrical, plumbing, data or ventilation systems were installed. The story doesn't say if the $10,000 is in Russian money or if the cost is in American dollars.

Here are two pictures. A construction engineer could roughly estimate the amount of liquid concrete mix used

The cost of the concrete hardly makes the price of a home.....it's the land, the doors and windows, the electrical wiring and fixtures, the plumbing and appliances, it's all the other stuff that raises the price, and chiefly that's the land it's built on....

I read this one a few days ago and was thinking along the same lines.

Being round may have it's conveniences in a structural a structural loading and manufacture sense, but it has a lot of negatives in terms of layout and use of space etc.

I didn't break it down, but I was wondering what the material cost would be to build something of similar dimension and quality? I think the budget is there.

What's not there is the man hours needed to pull off such a structure as well as the projected low maintenance and long life expectancy.

I'm not a fan of concrete walls for many reasons so I'd want to run verticals 16"oc and spray insulate before adding drywall etc. Doing that would easily add 2k+ to material and 100+ man hours to the labor)

a similar process would be a nifty way to add a sturdy new garage in short order, but it won't be a day.

The cost of a labor crew may be similar to the cost of renting this unit and the people to operate it? hard to say at this point.

A good crew can pour a foundation and put shingles on a the roof of a new and simple structure a few days after the concrete is cured.

..Like you were saying.. there is a lot more to consider than 10k material.

oh.. ..When I'm working and I have a little 'oops' I explain "That's so you know it wasn't made by some cheap robot"

That's very true,... its like what does it take to frame up a house,... its only a fraction of the total value.

Finish off a house is what really adds to the costs. And if your building your own house... once you move in an unfinished house... the schedules slows even more.

So, the actual point of the article, is that its applying new technology. And to get interest, the cost are swept under the rug.

How would it go over with, "We just 3D printed a house for only 5 times the conventional value."

I think if one looks carefully it is at least double wall concrete with air gap for insulation. I suspect the stub ups for electrical and plumbing are in the slab?

I can see this as energy efficient in a cold climate such as Russia. The spiral design appears to do a lot to eliminate wind siphoning or pressure gusts that rob heat from inside.
