I will guess an atom, not sure of what, but you like graphene, so it's an atom of graphene...

if it were graphene all you'd see is a carbon atom linked on a single flat plane 1 atom thick

not even close

There is no such thing and an atom of graphene! Graphene is a specific single-layer structure of many carbon atoms.

You misread Fredski's post. Graphene is 1 atom thick not only 1 atom.

I wasn't responding to Fredski, but to JPool's post #7. Check the upper right of my post.

It's an atomic-force microscope image of some sort of crystal, but lots of different materials have a similar atomic structure so it's hard to say which one it is. OR it could be the end of a fibre made of carbon nanotubes?

Dear Fredski, as someone else already said "COOL"!

I did not guess it, not even close.

I was on the level of a multi LED torch bulb/lamp (flashlight for the non "Limeys" here!) that I have owned for some years (that my dog love to carry and illuminate the way for me on walks in the dark!), but a newer, much improved version in both the sheer number of LEDs and their newer smaller size (I certainly got that in the right direction at least!)!

So boring comment to an end!

The real reason for posting is that I feel that I must thank you for all your great posts/attempts to keep our collective interest alive and active.

You have done/are doing a really great job for many here!

So many, many thanks from myself and "long may you reign"!

I am sure many others here are of a similar opinion!

A little bit like the field ion microscope pictures I took of iridium, but obviously a totally different lattice, and this appears to not have a tip as my sample did. Been away from crystal lattices for 40 years now, so I'm lost.

Atomic-force microscopy. Its predecessor was the Scanning Tunnelling Microscope which won its inventors the Nobel Prize. Not only can the technique resolve individual atoms, but can also be used to manipulate them:
