Convert Ethernet to Serial RS 232 Modbus and Use Modscan Software, Possible?

08/17/2017 6:12 AM

Hi All,

I have siemens plc with ethernet communication port controlling pumping stations flow and level, I have modscan software, is it possible to convert from ethernet to serial rs232 and run the modscan software to log on the data from the plc?

sorry maybe silly question but just to confirm before purchasing lan/rs232 converter.

Regards

What did the equipment suppliers and the software supplier say during recent telephone calls on this topic?

He was told that what he has to do is "purchasing lan/rs232 converter".

He is here to "confirm" that they are right.

Is it possible, yes it it possible to convert ethernet to RS232, but you will need additional hardware. This is because ethernet and RS232 use different signal levels for communication. They also use similar but different protocols to communicate. You will also need compatible software drivers to bridge from one protocol to another. If siemens nor modscan don't already have such drivers (I suspect they do) then this is probably a much more demanding programming job than either of us know about.

I would contact WinTECH and ask their advice, if you have not already done this.

Here's a connector that will connect them. $1.00 Amazon

But, you really need

Rockwell and Prosoft have appliances for that.

1. Modscan is Windows software (a generic Modbus master), so it will run on a PC with an Ethernet port. PC's no longer have serial ports. Your PLC has ethernet. Hence, Modscan talking Modbus/TCP through the PC Ethernet port as a client/master can communicate to your PLC if it has a Modbus enabled CPU, and licensed Modbus server/slave functionality. So where does RS-232 come into play?

2. Siemens PLC's can do Modbus, but only with the appropriate CPU and licensing. There is NOTHING native about Modbus with Siemens, in fact, Siemens is a Johnny-come-late to the Modbus world, given that Siemens thinks the world should all be Profibus (having been subsidized by the German government to invent Profibus). Be warned that you purchase Modbus functionality with a Siemens platform.

3. For a discussion of Modscan's datalogging function, see this thread:
