Sheet for Water Tank

08/28/2007 6:56 AM

hello friends, i'm looking for some kind of sheet which can be melted with heat. The purpose is to protect or laminate the bootom of a concrete watertank. I've heard about one kind of sheet (something like bitumin sheet) which is food grade and could easily fix on the bottom of a water tank with a heat gun, waiting for your valuable advice. Krishna

Concrete tanks should not normally need a lining for potable-grade water provided the water is adequately protected against the risk of bacterial activity. Chlorination and ozonation of the water are the methods commonly employed.

I suggest you start here!

Do you want to seal it for leaks?

A good product might be Duram (Or durum), Try your local paint specialist.

Durum is a form of wheat used for making pasta. My brother raises it on his farm.

Assume you to be referring-to : http://www.duram.com.au/ ...?

They are (certainly) one of many manufacturers, also offering various options.

The final product CHOICE, though. still hinges on many unanswered questions.

e.g., what is the size of this project? What grade of concrete (and reinforcement) is being over-coat protected? What weather conditions (all environmentals) will prevail during application? (is enclosure with commercial dehumidification possible?) How deep is the client's pocketbook? What longevity do they seek for the lining (7 years, 15, 30)? What allowances might be available for future maintenance? etc. etc. etc.

Still extending wishes for success ~

In Spain, the agriculturists have started using a thick black plastic sheet which they weld together to form an inner liner! It seems to be common practice so I will go and check out the name for you!

I'll vote for coating the concrete with a food grade epoxy and be done with it.

I'd check out the plastic foil that is used for landscaping (ponds).

Available at most hardware stores, cheap, and proven effective.

You should not use bitumin anything for "food grade" water. It is nothing but asphaltic tar and will contaminate the water. I'd call a swiming pool guy. Or use an epoxy paint.

You have multiple options;

epoxy liner - good for 10+ years

polyurea liner - good for 25+ years

hdpe containment liner - specially welded during installation to fit your tank - similar principles to that used in geotechnical applications - like a big bag inside the tank

I think profiling the concrete and applying polyurea would be your best option long term - cost/benefit aspect

Both #8 and #9 make good points. You have numerous options, but the best choice depends on MANY factors being taken into consideration (including your pocketbook; what kind of environmental factors will predominate during the lining project, etc).

Both SSPC (post 8... formerly the Steel Structures Painting Council, now known as the Society for Protective Coatings) and NACE (www.nace.org National Association of Corrosion Engineers International ~ which developed the CIP / Coating Inspector Program) have combined their efforts to write Joint Standards for many different aspects of coatings and linings.

"PS" ~ In your application, as any such immersion-duty, the product is referred to as a lining, distinguished from coatings by their individual/differing chemistries.

The end-point being, learning ALL of the basics 1st (i.e, learning the mistakes that others have made, and how to avoid them!) ... and documenting all of the things that need to be considered before deciding on any given approach ... will afford you the greatest peace-of-mind and greatest longevity to your project.

Don't forget to also check-out suggestions from AWWA (American Water Works Association) :

Wishing you success in your endeavors ~

AWWA, also a great starting point. Wish I could send a file, but it is not ethical.

Hello Krishna, we specialize in coatings/linings for water tanks with NSF approval. The coatings are a 2 part epoxy coatings and have been used in many water tanks throughout North America. If you want to call me at 778-231-6027 and ask for Norm, I will gladly send you information on what coating/linings can be used for your water tank.

Hello Norm,

So how is Tracy and all of the gang doing? Since Enron, I have not been around Coatings much, but I am still impressed with some of your capabilities. Tell the crew I said hello!

Forum, I covered these guys as an Inspector on some of their projects.

I handed "Guest" the solution on a silver platter in post #5. Norm, you and I both know that this is the best, most cost effective way to go. No muss, no fuss, just "get 'er done"! I wasn't sure he would know the acronym "NSF". I hope he doesn't spend a fortune welding in polymer sheeting only to find out in a few years that he made a mistake.
