Calculating Dewatered Cake Production from Belt Filter Press

12/09/2017 9:41 AM

I need to calculate the outgoing Q from a belt filter press given the following parameters:

-Incoming sludge from aerobic digesters: 21,248 gal/day @ 2% solids
-Cake solids concentration of 18%
-Solids capture through the belt filter press is 95%

Assume 1.05 S.G. for the sludge and cake, where applicable.
Thank you VERY much. I came up with 123 ft3/hr but not sure if this is correct. Any help at all will be very much appreciated.

Measure the output for one minute and multiply by 60.

Still to many variables...

  1. are you sizing a filter Press., then contact vendor... and consider this data.
  2. if you buying used one and looking at what size,... see 1

most is still empirical information.

It's a mass balance, convert the incoming flow to weight, 8.76 lb/gallon, 93.03 US Short Tons/day, 2% is 1.86 tons/day dry solids, 5% lost to the filtrate, 1.768 tons / day dry solids, now make it 18% solids by weight by adding water back in, 9.822 Tons/Day, 0.4 tons/hr. Assuming your final density at 8.9lb/gal using formula below, that is still about 10% of your value(?) , 12 cuft/hr, assuming 7.48053 gallons/cubic foot.

Water assumed at 8.34lb/gal, and no allowance for the water displaced by the fiber/sludge in the mixture, but pretty close for the accuracy typical for these calculations that don't include many different adjustments that affect the actual operation of a typical filter belt press .

If a cellulose or plant based sludge, then Cameron Hydraulic Data has this:

Typical Paper Mill Stock Density

lbm/gal=lbm. water/gallon + ( 3.33 x % consistency), where 3.33 is a rate of change factor.

(Consistency in % is pounds mass of fiber contained in pounds mass of the mixture of fiber and water) Weight of dry fiber/weight of mixture of water & fiber.

In minutes, and using 2.5 Bone Dry lbm of solids/minute at discharge, water at 60F

...which assumes, of course, that the <...Belt Filter Press...> is adequately sized to be able to cope with the throughput.

If it isn't large enough, then the output will be lower than this.

This sort of thing indicates the value of carrying out pilot plant trials.
