Power and Signal Cable Separation

09/05/2007 5:55 AM

What is the Min. distance between 3.3kV lead covered power cable and 24VAC twisted, non-shielded digital signal cable laid in cable tray?

This is not perhaps the answer you seek, and it based only on practical experience. The minimum spacing is 1 tray, i.e., next tray over.

Power cables & controls cables should be separated by 600 mm distance if running parallel. Crossing should be always at 90°. If not possible to maintain 600 mm distance it is better to lay control cables through metallic conduit. For bus cables like profibus copper conduit is recommended.

They do not belong in the same tray, unless you put the 24V in a separate steel or other metallic conduit.

Same tray? Wow! That's a tough one.

Er, how about changing the digital signal cable for a fibre-optic instead? The separation wouldn't matter then.

to PWSlack,

No, I will use two vertically spaced, separate cable trays.

What an odd couple! lead jacketed and bare LT cable?

In my country,(and in many others) you CAN NOT put them in the same tray. But if no other alternative and your electrical code permits, I would put the LT inside a metal conduit, and will ground the conduit very very well.

Wangito.

I remember that the cable separation requirements are clearly mention in IEC/ISO.. standard. Anybody remember/know which code that spell this requirement?
