USB Problem

09/05/2007 2:33 PM

Hello Friends,

My Pen Drive is not giving me satisfactory performance. On my computer, it took me one and half hour to transfer 1.04 GB folder from my hard disk to my pen drive. My computer specifications are Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM and 2.66 GHz processor speed. The same folder, it took me just 20 min to transfer from my pen drive to some other computer with specifications 1.9 GHz and 248 MB RAM, P4. What could be the problem? Also the light from the pen drive that glows often flickers even when I am not transfering any data to it. Can any one please help?

How do you reinstall the driver?

It looks like you're using USB 1.1 (a.k.a. "original USB"). This has a significantly lower transfer rate than the most recent USB 2.0 (or "Hi-Speed USB"). 2.0 is about 40x faster than 1.1. If you have a desktop computer, you could probably benefit from buying a USB 2.0 PCI card. However, this may not be the problem. Here's an FAQ on USB, there are instructions on how to check whether your hardware is old or new.

Most probably Hopology is dead right, check the main board manual as to which USB specification it has, I would also bet on 1.1 standard. As he says, go and buy a $10 (or less) PCI to USB card. (after checking your main boards PCI slot spec!!! there are 3 volt and 5 volt and mixed 3 & 5 volt PCI slots if i remember correctly!!)

Theroretically, the stick may be making a mistake too and switching down its speed wrongly to 1.1 also.... but unlikely.

Also as a side note: USB solid state drives 4GB and over are much slower than the smaller drives. (probably addressing issues) so two 2GB drives will load much faster than one 4GB drive. That is unless your file size is over 2GB.

This will probably change with the next gen of flash drives coming out.
