What Would it Take for a New Drone Sport?

01/26/2018 8:23 AM

If you combined lasar tag with multiplayer drone racing, what would you have? I dare say that a new sport would be the result. Imagine an approved gathering at some location such as an abandon factory or even new construction before the windows go up or the drywall goes in. After all, we wouldn't want to damage the building if we had a crash....

Talk about a team sport!?! Suitable for television and much more fun than the Drone Racing League if that is possible. Just imagine the possibilities. Not just light weight fighters with replacable colored laser diodes (firing blasts of wavelength specific light blasts) instead of projectiles. Receivers record wavelength specific hits so that there is no such thing as friendly fire. An accumulation of "hits" would power down the drone and force it to land until a reset was allowed.

There could literally be a drone battleship in the air capable of copious amounts of "damage" and be much harder to take down than the lighter weight fighters. It would take money and organizing but it would be a step above the Xbox.

Most sports start with a single low tech device like a ball.

For this you need people with a similar interest.. and bank account.

Drone racing sounds great.. plus lasers!? better..

Add voice control and I'm out!

Alexa! Fire! Alexa! bob and weave!

Pretty cool but it needs a lot of air space. A drone could hover behind a corner in wait for a target. Laser tag reduces the chance of making a mess. Firing button required on the controller.

This is a little more complicated than a "ball" game. It requires a starting point and a finishing point, and perhaps some rules. Nets can be hung to protect areas off limits to drones. Drone collisions are likely but most are made with easily replacible parts.

Camera signals would be fed from various if not all players so a replay is possible but it would require a TV control board like that of a television studio. So, I don't think this would be easy, but it would be a lot more exciting than golf.

Interesting? That's like saying Sophia Loren has pleasant features.

That - plane - is - awesome!

Personal finances, and FAA flying regulations permitting, you could certainly have one-on-one, air-to-air, drone-combat, lazer-dueling...

I'm not going to name, names,... but, there are people where it's never enough... they'll push beyond the limits.... and before you know... it puts someone's eye out.

Well, putting someone's lights out is another way of saying it less bluntly?

Of course, this is why we have to have "Fuhrer bunkers", and the whole show, don't ya know?

Do the military soldiers who conduct military training exercises, while under fire from (lazer-rifles), not wear adequate eye protection?...

The drones could be programmed to display increasing 'damage' in the form of sputtering, reduced performance, fire lights and maybe puffs of 'smoke' from a vape device.

Ribbon cutting is already the preferred means of combat in the FPV world for both planes and copters. Everyone chases everyone else to cut each others ribbons short. Whoever lands with the longest ribbon wins and after reviewing the video, whoever cut the most off their opponents wins.

Sort of like flag football meets fighting kites meets RC.

Great idea! Ribbons are thin paper? Or could a laser ignite a chemically treated piece of paper ribbon? Fly your drone through a nitrogen filled tube shaped chamber to extinguish the flame...

I'm thinking that the ultimate thrill would be first person video (FPV) combined with a helmet which picks up brain waves (mind control) to control the drone. I want one!

While I like the idea.. I'm curious as to what level of performance will be obtainable.
