That's rather like asking what style and size of shoes to buy. The answer is the same: that it depends upon the application.

The more you know about Excel™, the better.

It depends on what you end up doing. I don't touch any of the software mentioned. I especially dislike Excel ... only good for data dumps (CSV files) and accountants. For engineering calculations, I'm a fan of MathCAD (SMath is a free look alike). There is I'm so the other M calculation platforms. VERY difficult to back check spreadsheets in an engineering environment.

...so personal preferences come into play, making the question practically unanswerable.

<...interesting...> lies within the experience and enthusiasm of the user; what is <...interesting...> varies across users.

that covers a pretty wide swath,...

Applied Flow Technologies, if your designing processes for flow dynamics

Many ME's will need to do testing on structures to prove that simulation was correct. This is done with exciters and accelerometers, and software that determines mode shapes and resonance frequencies (eigen values and eigen vectors). One such SW package is available from Structural Dynamics, and they call it SO Analysis (terrible name). Here is a link:

Start with Excel(R), on an on-going basis, if you haven't already...

MS Office for starters. MS Excel is a great tool. Also, a CFD, FEA, and mold simulation program. Choice of CFD program depends on your industry.
