Nobody knows what the "best" language is in any field. In New York, English is useful but I hear other languages every day.

I find Matlab very useful for simulations.

None of those. They are required in software engineering.

Learn VHDL-AMS instead.

did I miss something or what?

Software in EE?

No it cannot be true! Is it now part of the degree course?

It's impossible to answer this question. EEs do a lot of different kinds of work. I spent a lot of my career developing signal processing software which was written in C, which, incidentally, I learned on the job. You may do similar things or something entirely different.

I would start with C, which is a procedure-oriented language. C++ is an object-oriented language, but the syntax is almost identical to C. The difference is in how programs are constructed, centered around objects that have procedures defined for them. My advice is to start with C and then go on to C++, which is an extension of C.

Once you learn one or two languages and have an understanding of how programs work, it's not overly difficult to move to a new language. (It's basically a mindset of how to think like a computer.) By the time you graduate, most likely there will be a new language in vogue.

The important thing to remember is that you aren't learning everything you will need to know in school. You are only learning how to learn. As an engineer, if you don't learn new things continuously on the job, you will soon be left behind.

Electrical Engineers write software. Industry wants engineers to come out of school knowing C for real time applications and C++ is gaining popularity.

so if you are learning 1 language, make it C.

Do EEs actually write software as part of their job?

You must refer to people who studied Electrical Engineering and now work as Control/Electronics Engineers. However, technical jobs nowadays require deeper knowledge in each field, and if you are doing one job, you are not doing the other.

As I learned over time, you can either be good at software, or be good at hardware, but you cannot be good at everything.

It is not possible to say which one is <...best...> as the application to which it is to be put has been withheld from the forum.

The reasoning behind which one to select rather than all three is also abstruse.

That's just the begining. Learn all of them that you can because you never know quite where it is going to be needed. Also learn PLC software (pick a brand) and HMI software (Human Machine Interface). Some of those you will have to pick up outside of college. A good course in statistics is also worth learning. MathCad might be very helpful.

In other words, your learning is just begining. It will continue after you graduate but instead of worring about a grade, you will only worry about not breaking something that is very expensive.

My degree is EE and I taught myself LabVIEW. The help section is phenomenal, the highlight execution shows the data flow through the program. It is very intuitive and has huge capabilities. It's programming with pictures.

I also know Visual Basic, assembly and C/C++, but LabVIEW is the most often used language in my world.

I currently use LabVIEW to automate testing equipment for sensors and handheld controllers we build.
