Truck Will Not Stay Running

05/23/2018 11:01 PM

I have a truck, (Details below) That will not stay running. It starts rather easily. But will only run for 30 to 60 seconds. Then it sputters and dies.

I have changed the injectors about a year ago.

New Fuel Pump. Lots of pressure, Blew hose off of fuel filter when clamp was not tight enough.

New fuel filter

New O2 sensors

New throttle body sensor.

It is a 2000 Ford Ranger XLT Extended Cab

Flex Fuel, 3.0m VIN:V Which means "Vulcan" Engine. (too bad spock cant fix it for me)

So looking for suggestions of what could be a problem?

Joe

Did you try google?

Many hits about O2 sensors and so on.

Good luck!

So could be the cam shaft position sensor!

Seems there is lots of options to replace more parts.

As said: good luck!

Code readers are a lifesaver.

I have two, one "pro" model and one $12.00 USD plug-in from Amazon, with phone app. You can monitor engine performance while driving (not recommended). Some stores will loan you one, after a deposit.

Check for sensor unplugged or broken wiring.

It sounds fuel-related.

It sounds like some engine running sensor (alternator voltage, crank position, vacuum, etc.) is failing to detect your engine is running. The computer is then timing out of the STARTING mode and being shut down. Get the codes!

Other then, did this just start or did it lead up to this...

If it just started, what happened... Did you fill up your gas tank when the gas pumps were low... i.e. bad fuel.

Other wise...

You have 2 choices...

  1. sounds like your a handy person... buy a code reader... saves the google search of trial and errors
  2. or take it to a mechanic.

If your fuel rail has a pressure regulator that is referenced back to the intake manifold, check the vacuum hose between the manifold and the regulator. Not a bad idea to go over all your vacuum lines and inspect them carefully for cracks, dry-rot, collapsing under operation, etc. before you buy any new parts. They can cause all kinds of difficult to diagnose problems especially in a vehicle of that age, regardless of codes thrown. I have a 2000 F-150, a 2002 Chevy Suburban, . . . ask me how I know.

Is your oil pressure coming up right away?

Most vehicles these days have sensors that will cut the engine if they don't detect oil pressure within a certain time limit.

Did not think of this one. Waiting for my son to come home. will see if any codes, and check the oil pressure thing too.

Thanks!

Ok, Old codes was the O2 sensors. After those were changed out now no codes at all.

Every now and then it will throw a code about running too lean.

That's it.

Running too lean sounds like a vacuum leak.

You said you changed the fuel filter ....

did you check if there there is also a fuel filter inside the tank at the fuel pickup point ?

did you check if there is a small filter inside the fuel line banjo fitting at the injector pump ?

i have had the same symptoms you mentioned (on other vehicles ) with filters blocking up , dirt would get sucked up towards the filter , block , then starve the engine of fuel.

Hi there. Probably an air leak into the fuel suction hose? Or dirty suction filter inside the fuel tank?

Seems all the likely casues have been ruled out except for one.

If it sputters and dies at idle, but continues to run with throttle input, I'd suspect the idle control valve is not doing its job. At initial cold startup the ECU opens the ICV just a bit more and holds it there for about 60 sec while injecting just a bit of extra fuel. If the ICV is leaking the engine will die when the injector duty drops back because the ECU is still running in open loop and the mixture has gone too lean. Once warm, this would result in a high idle, and a vacuum leak could have the same effect.

If the ICV stepper motor is failing it could be closing altogether choking the engine. Worst case is the ECU driver for the ICV has failed. In either of these cases the engine will fail to idle even when warm.

OK, now if you were to play with the throttle body, ( equivalent to revving the engine some in an old carb car) would these symptoms still be the same.

Seems thast this does little change whether you leave throttle alone or play with it. the result is the same.

Okay I saw this absolute gem today .

my mechanic diagnosed a problem missed by at least two mechanics previously who had the vehicle for a week and couldn’t find a fuel starvation issue.

they had replaced filters , fuel pump , sensors etc without success.

What he found was the fuel filter head was leaking air past the shaft seal on the lift pump.

first he bypassed the whole fuel filter and the vehicle ran like a race car so now he replaced the filter head and it’s built in lift pump and it’s a win.

Success.

Loosen the tank filler cap and see if it makes a difference, if it does check the vent to the tank, this is a first try thing, if it doesn't work then move on to sensors engine management ECT. One thing worth trying is disconnect the battery over night or 6-8 hours then reconnect and try again,(make sure you know your code for the radio). It's worth trying this before getting into expensive exploration.

good luck,

Bazzer

"Fuel Trim Diagnostics

To maintain the correct air/fuel mixture, the PCM adjusts Short Term Fuel Trim (STFT) and Long Term Fuel Trim (LTFT). Both of these values can be read on a scan tool that can display OBD II system data, and may be used to diagnose fuel-related problems.

Normal range for both STFT and LTFT is typically plus or minus 8. If the numbers are +10 or higher for STFT and LTFT, the engine is running LEAN (not enough fuel). If the values for both STFT and LTFT are both minus 10 or more, the engine is running RICH (too much fuel).

For more information on this subject, see What Is Fuel Trim?

Vacuum leaks can create a lean-running engine that requires extra fuel to balance the fuel mixture. If you rev the engine to 1500 to 2000 rpm and hold it for a minute or so, and the STFT value drops back down to a more normal reading, it confirms the engine has a vacuum leak at idle. If the STFT value does not change much, the lean fuel condition is more likely a fuel delivery problem (weak fuel pump, restricted fuel filter, dirty fuel injectors or a leaky fuel pressure regulator) than a vacuum leak.

For more information about using fuel trim to diagnose a lean fuel condition, read this article on Fuel Trim by Wells Manufacturing (PDF file, requires Adobe Acrobat to read)."
