Scorcher: Friday's Local Weather

It's all weather babble, the announcer's choice.

Here at one TV station, it's not "HOT" until temp reaches 100ºF.

I'm sure that words that describe temperature extremes have distinctly local slants. A scorcher in NE New York State is probably not as hot as a scorcher in the SW. Conversely, brutal cold is colder here than in Tucson.

It gets brutally cold anywhere north of Florida....We get rainy, windy, sunny, hot, cold, but mostly pleasant...I remember Albany, it was cold all the time, brutally cold was <-20 below with the wind blowing, but you still had to go to school....haha

One (weather) man's opinion (from Sun Sentinel article):

Cold: Below 50 degrees

Cool: 50 to 60 degrees

Mild: 60 to 80 degrees

Warm: 80 to 90 degrees

Hot: Above 90 degrees

You and I know that "hot" does not do justice to the heat we endure here in Az.

Just like cold doesn't do justice to January in Minn.

One local forecaster has a acronym "NACITS" meaning "not a cloud in the sky".

Does that mean that it's or cold?

Well, we could use the A1-steak criteria:

• RARE = Cold
• Medium-RARE = Cool
• MEDIUM = Normal
• Medium-WELL = Warm
• WELL = Hot

I've been doing some welding, in the shade, early in the morning. After about 30 minutes, I'm toast.

It's 102°F outside now, in the shade of an Orange tree, under the eve of the house.

It happens here so seldom that the weatherman had to make an acronym for those special days.

It isn't cold, rainy or heat related but is used to describe the sky condition. That kind of relates to "rainy" as in the OP post.

According to BestInShow's linked glossary, there is no definition of "hot", but I do know that personal temperature preferences are highly individual, and depend on genetics, where one grew up, How long the person has lived in the current location, and to a very large extent on their medical condition, among others.

My personal point of view is that if you don't need a sweater in the morning, then it's too hot. I hate sweating...

Having recently heard of the new world record LOW of 109°F (43.6°C) in Oman. The high there that day was 128°F (53.3°C), I did a bit of research: The hottest officially recorded air temperature on Earth remains the 134°F (56.7°C) in appropriately named Furnace Creek in California's Death Valley. ...and for those concerned about global warming, that record was set in 1913.

I've lived in Arizona since 1969. You don't EVER get used to 115°F if you have to be outside in it.

Of course, it was ONLY 110°F today, when I went for a swim. 95°F was the low last night.

Of course, the record here was 122°F in 1990. I was here then too.
