Best Looking Design - What Do You Think?

07/25/2018 3:37 AM

I was talking with someone today about the aesthetics of automobiles. Since my mind has been on Alfa Romeo's lately, I asked his opinion about which version of the Spider he likes the best. He told me he likes the newest one - that wasn't what I was expecting. I gave it some thought and I have a hypothesis. If you'll oblige, let me know what you think about the different versions. I'd like to know which version you like the best and then if you can let me know your age category (one of the questions).

I appreciate your help.

There are five varieties of Alfa Romeo Spiders. Let me know which one you think is the best looking.

1. Early boat tail:

2. Early Kamm tail:

3. Rubber bumper Kamm tail:

4. Rubber bumper with rubber spoiler:

5. Last version with smooth transition bumpers:

IF you don't mind, can you let me know your age as well:

1. Under 20

2. 20 to 35

3. 36 to 52

4. 53 to 71

5. Over 71

Again, I appreciate your help.

Thank you.

I'll start by saying that I like the first version the best. To me, it has a very fluid look. Classic, timeless styling with smaller chrome bumpers and chrome mirrors. And that nice chrome Alfa grille! It looks eager and ready to drive!

My age category is #3.

For me the ideal would be a combination of 1 and 2.

I love the front of number 1, very smooth and a bit E-type like which I love, and the back of number 2.

But if I had to choose I would go for number 1 as well.

I am in age category 2.

I prefer style 1. 5 comes a close second. 2,3 & 4 are pretty 'orrible. Age range 4.

It's 2 followed very closely by 5. I like the chrome bumper/front end of 2, but 5 is fine too.

I'll soon be part of group 5.

That's a beauty! Untouchable $$, but a gorgeous car.

Here's my favorite. Again, untouchable $$, but what a design! I love the look of the back, where it pulls in tight and is highlighted by the two round lights and the deep inset license plate. You also can get a peek at the dash from the bottom photo.

I love old 911's, but look how boring it looks next to the Alfa!

Untouchable $$ ? Isn't that the Alfa Giulia? I'm not exactly wealthy, but $40K doesn't seem that far out of reach. Not when a vanilla Toyota Camry is around $30K.

I much prefer the Giulia to the Spider. I had a friend who owned a Spider. She was short (barely 5 foot tall, if even) and it suited her cause it looks so tiny.

I really prefer hardtops, but the open cockpit Shelby Cobra is one of the snazziest looking cars (imho) I've seen.

That's the Alfa 8C Competizione. They made only 500 of them. A 4.7L V-8. I've seen them go for $300K +.

The Giulia is a beautiful 4 door sedan. They make a Quadrifoglio version with something like 505 hp. It's actually pretty reasonable for a 500+ hp Italian car. I've seen them in the high $60K range.

The original Giulia was a really cool 1960's car. It came in a sedan, wagon and convertible. Small dispacement 4 cylinder engine, manual transmission, good handling and fun to drive.

I like driving my Alfa Spider. It's kinda awkward to drive (wide transmission tunnel) and the shifter is high and mounted on the center stack. I don't know if I'd want to drive it for a long time, but for short drives it's actually pretty comfortable. And it's a lot of fun to drive.

Shelby Cobras are beautiful cars. Out of my price range, but really neat cars. I like the older pre-Shelby AC Ace's. They're without the bulging fenders and have modest engines. Very cool roadsters!

I think that's a picture of an AC Ace, not a Shelby. The fenders aren't bulging and it has chrome around the grille.

Hadn't seen many cars before that required the passenger to enter through a hallway. How do those doors open?

Imagine trying to get in and out of the coupe! At least with the convertible, you don't have to worry about your head/shoulder/torso getting in the way!

On the convertible, the doors open up and forward. Not like a modern supercar, but like a 1952 Italian sports car should.

Remember, this is Italian, so there's no logic to the design. It's just made to look great!

Here's a video I found. Pretty cool!

I'd go for number 4 and I'm age group 4.

But, just for clarity I'm not much of a car person; i'm not familiar with the spider so I'm just going by the pictures plus I guess I do like bumpers to be functional bumpers.

They all look good. I'm barely in group#4. I saw this movie back in the golden age of sportscars. Then came the dark ages when they quit making them and you could only find old, used ones that required constant maintenance and repair. Fortunately, the Miata brought back the cars that are fun to drive...

Thanks! The car in the Graduate was super cool, but in Italian auto fashion, the gas gauge broke and he ran out of gas! Wouldn't been believable in a new Miata!

Number five with number 1 styling clues, such as real chrome bumpers. A marque such as Alfa should have a distinctive charm. You can buy a Chevy spark with transitional bumpers and plastic chrome decals. Next age group up from you.

Now here's the thing. I like the idea of this kind of car, but at 6'6" I do not fit in in it so all I can do is look at it.

In that case I like the boat tail. it has a certain personality the slab sided later versions lack.
I also think the last version looks way too much like a small Ford Thunderbird.

Age group 4

I prefer #1 even though the bumpers seem as though they would "bump" a little late. Having the top up really messes up the look of all of them.

The results came in a bit different than I had expected. First place was No.1, which I expected. Most like the chrome bumpers and the boat tail. Second place was No. 5, which surprised me. It looks clean and more modern (almost more of a completed look). The wheels are also Ferrari-ish. Third place was No. 4, which also surprised me. People who like this version are either reminded of their youth (they grew up seeing them or they owned one) or it has a 1980's look. No 2 was next (I thought it would've come in second! Alfa stopped the boat tail, due to poor trunk space, and introduced the Kamm Tail version.

The public liked the 1990 model (no 5) version the best with production numbers over 9000 units/year. The second most sold model is the 1986 (no 4) with over 7200 sold. That's followed by the 1991 (no 5 again) with sales over 7100.

Here's a piece of trivia. The Alfa Spider was designed and built by Pininfarina (design house). The founder's name was Farina, however the company was named Pininfarina after the owner changed his last name to Pininfarina.

Thank you to everyone for sharing!
