For Engineers and Other Train Buffs (PWSlack)

08/21/2018 6:57 PM

Take a break from bent curtain rods, welding fumes and boxes on poles.

You won't see many sights in America like these Stunning Images of Britain's Railways

Fascinating!

I'm surprised the caption to photo 3 doesn't mention Telford's Pontcysyllte aqueduct in the foreground, complete with narrow boat. Complements the railway nicely.

These pictures really are stunning -- sort of a mini-vacation looking at them.

Half of the photography team, presumably the son, is named Taliesin. The only person I've heard of with that name is Taliesin the Bard, an early Welsh poet. Unusual choice for a 20th-century name. I do know a handsome male Welsh terrier named Taliesin the Bard -- not sure how much he sings though.

It's hard to beat photos from 'the age of steam locomotives', which most of those photos are from.

BUT - these photos from modern trains in the western US are pretty impressive, too, I think:

https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/trains-western-us-photo-book/index.html

And then there are the iconic photos of O Winston Link:

Nice pics, too.

Trains fascinate me. When I worked in downtown near a siding, I'd watch the locomotive "hump" cars from one track to another for local distribution.

Twice my wife and I have ridden the Coast Starlight up the coast from LA to Seattle. That's a great trip! It was long enough ago that we had dinner and witched 4th of July fireworks from the top of the Space Needle. (After 9/11 the stopped the fireworks)

We then flew home after our visit.

That sounds like a great trip.

There is something magical about trains....don't know what it is....but magical.

Since our daughter was young, anytime we were near a railroad track and I heard a train coming, I would grab her and run to get as close as possible. That's a long time ago, yet, she caught the passion and anytime she is out and about and happens to be near a train, she sends me a photo. Special times because of trains.

Sorry, this comment is in reference to Lyn's comment about his trip near the top of the discussion.

I'm riding the train now but I'm underground and the view is terrible. Might as well be on the hyperloop.

The landscape is no less spectacular in North America. If you are into tradition, Great Britain is the place. I hope it will always remain traditional for us old guys. We must preserve traditional values; they are our legacy.

Off to Tenterden in Kent next month for an Engineering Institution meet to have a behind the scenes look at the work done by the folk restoring steam trains on the Bluebell railway.

I went there some years back. Fascinated by the Bulleid Locomotive which was being used to haul passengers on the line that day. Such a clean design - no Walschaerts Valve Gear or cylinders exposed - all concealed within. Strangest thing was a cladded wire attached to the axle of the rear driving wheel that hung loose and went up into the main structure. Couldn't work out what it was for. I never saw these in use in the 50's.

Love steam engines with a passion. Any guesses where this is?

It was intended in 1988 to get to Europe and North America
with our solar train to complete 5 continents / 40,000 km.
Australian start was 'paused' in New Zealand.
Maybe one day?! Train tripping can be fun 'in the front seat'.

1700 watts of PV (US$17,000 cost in 1988)
2x 1HP DC permanent magnet motors 60 volt)
6x 12v lead acid batteries storage
6 wheels, gauge 1m to 5ft 6inch.
Carry up to 5 people.

Milwaukee Road 261. Anytime this baby rolls it is a major event and photo op.

R/E Wikipedia. Locomotives without leading trucks are generally regarded as unsuitable for high speed use. The British railway inspectorate condemned the practice in 1895 following an accident involving the 0-4-4s at doublebois, Cornwall, on the great Western railway. Other designers however persisted with the practice and the famous 0-4-2 Gladstone class passenger express of the london, Brighton and south coast railway remained in trouble free service until 1933.

I looked for other information, but I could not locate the source.

1. Details of Doublebois accident.

2. What other types of equipment or practices did the British Railway Inspectorate condemn that were not followed.

3. The route, grade, track radius, engine speed that allowed safe operation of the 0-4-2 for 38 years.
