Custom Tool Thoughts

09/30/2018 9:28 AM

Im looking for a way to turn 9/16" nuts on a threaded rod in a very deep channel. 12 point wrench isn't giving me enough turn to re position wrench. Crow's feet are too large.

It looks from the picture that you can put a socket over it and the nut is at the end of the rod. Can you not leave the wrench over the nut and use a ratchet?

Your best bet may be to grind down an end wrench to get more turning angle. Or get Greg Morris to show up with some sort of Mission Impossible tool.

Another possibility is a flare nut wrench, which has an open end that allows for reaching around a tube.

Bingo. Especially the 12-point flare nut wrench.

Add some wobble socket extensions. Several short ones will allow the ‘sort of’ u-joint action required.

Or, use a u-joint.

For quick movement... Slice open a length of old bicycle inner tube and pull it around the nuts like a bicycle chain on a sprocket.

Use the slow wrench only to tighten or loosen.

Immobilize the nut in question and turn the rod?

The flare nut spanner as suggested by others is a good possibility.

You can get ratchet flare nut spanners, even ones with flex heads, to make the job easier, but they do require a little more space for the larger head

Piggy backing on #9. How does the rod turn? Does it turn under machine power? Can it be turned manually? If so, put an open end wrench on the nut and turn the rod.

It looks like the rod is continuous, so a socket won't work. A flare nut wrench of some type may work.
