Registering a domain name will always cost something, even if its only a few £ / $ a year just for the certificate fee etc...

As you have internet access you may find you have some free web space as well , so why not use it?

As stated -- registry does cost -- you might try a site such as GoDaddy (www.godaddy.com) registration there is less than $8.00 US/year and I haven't found many more reliable brockers -- As Electroman said - you might find that your Internet Service Provider allows a certain amount of server storage as part of your contract which will further mitigate expense. Remember you'll need to both register the name AND find a server to host your site. Lemme know if you need more specifics.

It can't be done. A domain has to have a home and someone's time has to be spent putting it in place. Some of these things are overpriced and some are pretty cheap, but there is a cost and who should pay it other than the person who uses it? But here's a way--the free market comes through. Get a bunch of friends together and tell them you can get them a domain cheaply. Find the cheapest domain registration you can find and divide the cost by the number of friends you think you can talk into buying a cheap domain. Charge them the cost plus that fraction. If you have ten friends, each will pay 110% of the actual cost to you of the domain and you will pay nothing for yours. If you only have five, 120%. You might offer some kind of premium to justify the cost--offer to design their homepage and help them to maintain their sites. Even if instead of getting a domain name you use an ip, you will pay a premium to reserve that ip for yourself. There ain't no such thing as a free lunch, as engineers are wont to say. If you want to play, you have to pay. No tickee, no washee--that's what my dad said. He who pays the piper calls the tune. So many cliches. Why do you suppose the language is packed with cliches that basically say the same thing? Because since the beginning of time, this has been the basic truth of the marketplace in every culture that had enough to trade among its own members or between groups. It probably goes right down to the interpersonal--women wanted hides and they were willing to exchange their affections for them. Men wanted sons and were willing to exchange a share of their meat to get them. Or something like that. In any case, nothing is free.

Your replys was very much to the point . May I add that there is one latin saying that was always quoted in Latin law . That one says it all

There is no free ride for a domain name, however, they are not very expensive. You can find most are from about $10 to $20 (US). Some servers like GoDaddy have a domain registration as a part of their service, and you can get that for as little as $8.95 (US) (sometimes less) per month. You can get free web sites too and share a domain or get sub-domains. I have free, unlimited website for my personal web page through rootsweb but must comply with their requirements. My site is listed is called "A Dinosaur's Life" and does contain lots of genealogy as well and much other stuff. But do not look for any pornography, I do not believe in that at all. Also, rootsweb does not believe in it either.

There is also facebook and myspace, too, but you will find a lot of hanky-panky on those popular sites and I would not recommend those sites for anyone who wishes to protect his or her identity from theft or if he or she is wanting to be safe from predators.

doteasy.com is $25US/year with free hosting, e-mail.

Their web site creation tool is fairly good.

The doteasy.com site looks like a reasonable deal. $10/month for unlimited site and e-mail is great. I would go for it. Also, the five year domain registration is good, too.

And there are perks for referals....

I can give my contact information if someone wants to have me benefit from this referal.

gigaconcept.com is hosted by them for the last 2 years and service has not been down noticeably.

We use free hosting and support has been exemplary.

Since I am letting my domain/host expire, I see no need for leasing a new domain/host. The rootsweb sub-domain is all I need at my age. I still will serve as executive web master and as one of the seven network administrators for deepspace.org, a non-profit network for the disabled and elderly computer users. Thanks for the offer, perhaps some others will take you up on the offer. The support given by the host is most important, so thanks for that information.

Lunar Pages offers free domain names for new subscribers to their web hosting programs. Also, http://www.freedomain.co.nr/ is giving away domain names with a .co.nr extension. Other than that, our best bet would be to get a reseller hosting account like at HostGator.com so you can host as many websites as you wish with unique domain names rather than having to use sub-domain names. I host about 5 websites with my Hostgator account for $25.00/month and have ample capacity for more.

You still need your name listed in the root servers - which is why you "register" the domain name -- if you are completely private and have a static ip address you and others can reach your site just by using the IP address
