Who Speaks for Earth?

11/12/2018 1:01 PM

I see this publication doesn't have a comments section. I believe you will all have a comment or two...

https://physicsworld.com/a/megawatt-laser-beacon-could-communicate-with-aliens/

My questions are, how do we know anything or anyone in the path of the beam is benevolent? How do we decide if we, Earth as a whole, want to find out? Who speaks for Earth? Can anyone just shoot a laser out whenever they want?

<...Can anyone just shoot a laser out whenever they want?...> Ability is unlimited. There are, obviously, legitimacy restrictions, and they depend upon the applicable jurisdiction.

You can add the link yourself using the link icon. Highlight the text where you want the link or the URL. After you create the link choose "New window" under Target. The version of CMS we use with CR4 doesn't automatically create links from URLs.

Re: Who Speaks for Earth

Well how long do you think it would take, minimum, to reach an alien civilization that could recognize this signal and wish to communicate? I think it would take a long time, long after we are all gone....In any case making a decision based on really nothing and doing something for no reason when the consequences could be catastrophic, has never stopped us before...If we did happen to contact an alien civilization, that had the ability to communicate or travel at +lightspeed, they would have abilities far beyond ours, at least our abilities now, in the future who can say what circumstances might exist, we might need a new planet to inhabit, maybe we would become the attackers that we fear....Earth people attack new world of warlike aliens....the warlike being propaganda of course....but that is so far into the future that nobody can predict what would happen....

I would ask what is the motivation for this, to by chance contact an advanced civilization? That means an alien spaceship already in the neighborhood....any contact would put us at risk because they would be extremely technologically advanced compared to us....they could enslave the entire Earth by means we haven't even dreamed of....they could be any manner of creature...What would scientists hope for? ...peaceful benevolent creatures that would trade what with us? knowledge? for what? ....besides any truly advanced knowledge would probably destroy civilization as we know it...

So I don't see any reason for this, it seems foolhardy and frivolous....

A species that could travel interstellar distances would be far advanced to us. I see 3 possibilities for our relationship to them:

1. Friends

2. Pets

3. Food

I'm not betting on #1. Let's don't be stupid.

You forgot about the (value?) of reality-show-type entertainment...

...and, as a source of gambling (opportunities) of betting on when, and

where, the next armed conflict will break out, and

whether or not it will ''go-nuclear''...

Re: Who Speaks for Earth

In a lighter note, it is theoretically possible that

a space alien could act on any such signal, and could,

from our perspective, come to Earth from outta the sky...

It could have one big horn, and one big eye...

It could be purple, and also fly, (under it's own power) that is...

So, it could be a pidgeon-toed, under-growed, flying purple people-eater...

but, it might not eat us because we're not purple people...

or, if we were, we'd could be too tough to eat, hopefully...

It might just be able to play rock-n-roll music through the horn in its' head...

And, all it might want to do is just to get a job in a rock'n-roll band...

That would sure look strange to me...

(it might sound pretty good, though...)

But, I'll not holding my breath waiting for that to happen, just yet...

Who said they had to travel? What's to say an "alien" life form didn't start out evolving here, (like superman) at the same time water appeared on earth, and after eon's of "watching" decided to hire Elon Musk to get him the hell out of here.

Seems like that species would better be called 'expatriot' than 'alien'.

Besides it's a laser. Where do you point it? Like throwing darts blindfolded and then hoping your great great great great.......grand children are listening for the response!

That's a lot of megawatts for nothing.

Read the article. They know exactly where to point it and there are valid candidate planets in less than 4 light years away.

Name one. Even Proxima Centauri > 4 LY away.

Sorry, yes, Proxima Centauri is 4.3 LY. I hate it when I transpose things...

But, point stands, "there are valid candidate planets in ...about... 4 light years away."

".... That's a lot of megawatts for nothing...."

.

Not necessarily. If this is ambitious enough and uses high efficiency lasers (somewhere at or above efficiency diode lasers >60%) and it is powered with the likes of solar, wind (solar), and hydro (solar), this could be just the solution being clamoured for to reduce global temperature sending us into the next glacial period.

Collect up all that excess solar energy and shoot it out into space? There is an average of 83.6 peta watts over the entire surface of the earth each day so a few megawatts won't help much. Maybe if we illuminate the entire galaxy...

If the magnitude seems insufficient, consider scaling. It is interesting to me as a process which might serve to reduce the total energy of the planet by means other than reflection of incoming radiation, even if the lack of practicality means it never graduates to anything beyond a thought excercize.

Evolution degraded life into gas and oil. Maybe the mammals (after 160 million years) needed some help getting rid of some big bullies, so when alien forms got enough nerve to come, they convinced them with their loving eyes, to hit the planet (but not too hard) so they could come out of their holes and eventually pump the gas and oil back to the surface and burn it. "Why would you do that" the alien form said, and departed back into the friendly ocean. We'll come back again after the next ice age, and see if we can lead a simpler life with simpler land mammels. I kinda liked the wolf people, and those Hopi people. And the planet we came from became uninhabitable anyway.

Re: Who Speaks for Earth?

Nobody speaks for Earth.

"what would be the best way of communicating with intelligent alien life on distant planets?"

We can't even communicate with one another effectively, so how could "we" possibly convince "them" that "we" were worthy of their attention?

If "they" are advanced enough to intercept and understand our light show, "they" already know "we" are basically a savage, warring immature group of children with nothing in common with each other, or them.

Maybe we're just a million years behind them in development, and they already obliterated themselves like we might someday.

Keep on dreaming.

There is a lot of evidence that dolphins are as intelligent as we are. We can't communicate with them in person even though we occupy the same planet. I find it hard to believe that we would have much luck communicating with extraterrestrial aliens over a low bandwidth data channel with a latency measured in years!
