The sun will rise in the west

10/08/2007 12:39 AM

Is there any astronomical calculation which predicts the rise of our sun in the West ?

There can be no astronomical calculation for the prediction for such an event because it is outside the operation of solar system for the last 10,000 years of recorded history. In other words it has nothing to base such a prediction on

Why not the sun rise in the west? If you stay on Venus planet, you will find the sun rise from west and down east.

Guess who is the first man to launch this venus?

I can offer you a real way to watch the sun rise from west.

Take a fast plan or rocket, flitht from east at evenning bound to west, the flighter is very fast, so that you can find a wonderful things, the sun rise from west and you will arrive your distination at the morning of the day.

again according to the speed, round the earth, you can get the fact. the sun rise from west and then to east.

The Finns don't have Sunflowers - the heads just twist themselves off as they track the sun. Horizontal trees are a problem as well, that's how the log cabin evolved.

Re: The sun will rise in the west

Hi Charles & Kris,

Aurorae are caused by charged particles from the Sun striking the Earth's upper atmosphere at very high velocities. Aurorae occur most often near Earth's magnetic poles where the field is stronger and nearly perpendicular to the surface. The particles spiral down the field lines and follow them into the atmosphere, ionizing it and producing the beautiful colors we see. For the most part, the particles themselves don't produce the bulk of the auroral light. Rather, the light comes from ionized oxygen and nitrogen in the upper atmosphere as these gases recombine with the electrons ejected by the collisions.

So, I guess it's a toss-up: the light comes from the atmosphere, but the reason for it originates with the Sun.

That was my thought as well, but I wasn't sure enough to say it. The picture was taken from the web-site I linked to previously ( In Finland). I was so staggered that I looked around the web for a few more, and they were all equally astounding. The problem is that modifying photo's is so easy, and the web so expansive, it's hard to tell what is 'true'. I've never seen the aurora. Occasionally it can be seen from Scotland, but never when I've been there at the right time. The most northerly place in Finland can see it 200/365 days. I'd love to be there on one of them. Perhaps if I get lucky with a week or so to spare I might get to see it. It certainly ranks as on of those 'must see before you die' type things. People I've spoken to tell me it's every bit as amazing as the pictures you see in magazines etc.

e - Does light pollution kill off this view as much as it does watching the stars ? What I mean is, in say 10 years, will the view diminish ?

At one time vermin was driving a Bathyscaphe* in his quote line. My frequent laughing at his comments turned to hyper-ventilation, and so I now have associational panic attacks whenever I see him around. Luckily my ever handy sick-bag can also function as a Carbon Dioxide breather. At one time there was a Russian sub in Folkestone harbour, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't a Typhoon class - the harbour had some water left in it.

* I think this was the spelling variant the v used, there's several to choose from.

You gotta admit you can go pretty far on those 40,000 litres (?) of gas!

Morning, E-man;

you are luck to see the beautiful aurorae. I can only see from tv, movies and popular science magzine.

however I hve some suspect at the pic. altough I know its from Fenland nation web site when I visit the website

you see, from the shade D, we can judge the sun is from east. what is the S, it looks like sunlight? the direction of the shade seems something wrong. prolong it, tey seem has an angle very clear.

what si object A? tree, mountain? see ground agin, so smooth, look like a carpet. its eems in a room

see color of aurorae, is it too green? althiug the shape of the aurorae is very look like I saw on the media, but the jiut of sunlight and background seem to plan, no intergradation...

Press the 'Rate' button and read what the popup says. If you like the post on which you found the button, press the 'Good Answer' radio button. If you feel the post is off-topic, press the 'Off-Topic' radio button. Personally, I don't see why the two radio buttons must be mutually-exclusive. I've read some priceless posts that were entirely off-topic and well-worth the read.

If you think the post sucks AND you think it is on-topic, don't select anything.

When you're satisfied with your choice (you can always change your mind), press 'Add Vote' or press 'Cancel' if you decide not to rate the post. After you press a radio button you can de-select it only by pressing the other radio button. You can't de-select both radio buttons at the same time. Press the 'Cancel' button instead.

You've been on this forum for some time and you've probably seen some posts having a green "thumb-up" symbol. When a post accumulates enough 'Good Answer' points, the symbol appears on that post and the poster wins the fawning admiration and envy of fellow CR4 members and guests.

When a post accumulates enough "Off-Topic" points, the poster is shot. Just ask Kris. Mwahahaha.

LOL ! Just to demonstrate this further cnpower : I am going to post this with the " Yes, this comment is very likely to be considered off topic" box ticked. It is already ticked by default since I am replying to an 'off-topic' post. Next I will cast a vote for europium making his shown rating a 4 instead of 5 and vote negative on my own post making it 6 (instead of the default 5 which will happen in this situation) . If europium gets enough votes, his post will no longer appear as 'off topic'. In your user profile I think you have the option to select how all posts appear in a thread ( eg all 'collapsed' etc). It's not possible to vote the same way twice for an individual post. My suggestion is to experiment a little - it's the aggregate score on individual posts that is more important.

But then again, you'll probably ask them why they're calling you an ass instead of an arse, and they'll shoot you anyway.

They'd shoot me for being pedantic about the lack of a bath in the bathroom ! They can also shoot my ass, but not my dog - I'd have to write a blues/country song if they shot Ol' Blue.

Hi Cnpower,

I still think the pic is real. It is likely a short time-exposure as well. Aurorae often move (looking much like glowing 'curtains') and look slightly blurred in this pic. My guess is that the shutter was open for a few seconds. Aurorae come in all colors, but intense green is sometimes seen as in this picture. They can also look deep ruby red, purplish-white, white, and sometimes magenta (purple). Sometimes the color changes. Sometimes aurorae are pretty much stationary. Sometimes they move very quickly like a flag waving. Sometimes they shimmer.

I'm guessing the orange glow could either be from distant city lights or from sunset. Modern street lights these days are generally high-pressure sodium. You can tell because they have an orangish cast.

My guess is that the white light on the snow-covered trees (not mountains) is probably moonlight. It looks unusually bright probably from the extended exposure time.

The landscape and trees look artificially smooth because they are covered in powder snow. The Colorado mountains sometimes look like this after a major snowfall. Powder snow can look fake if you've never seen it before. Powder also makes for the best skiing!

Hi cnpower,

Sodium lamps come in two flavors: low-pressure and high-pressure. The low-pressure kind emit an almost pure, monochromatic yellow light. Pure yellow.

The high-pressure lamps, on the other hand, emit a broader spectrum having a dominant wavelength in the orange part of the spectrum (there's some blue and some other, fainter colors mixed in as well). They look orangish, and very distinctly so in contrast with the low-pressure kind.

I can't speak for your neck of the woods (China), but here in the US the high-pressure kind are by far the most common just about anywhere you go.

Have you ever been in a parking lot looking for a particular color car under low pressure sodium lights? Every car is just a shade of gray!

Also, very unhappy to report that while europium glows under 532nm laser light, europium oxide does not! Perhaps I'll try mixing it with aluminum powder and 100% ethnal... That should get something interesting started!!!

you are behind color glasses.

you can only see wood poles in museum, even in a small vallige use eithe cement poles or matal poles for hi pressure street lamps. we call that kind of lamp as sve energy lamp.

there maybe some lamp fixture made in china in your city. include much of high pressure sodium lamp.

I forget, two years ago, china shanghai began to adopt new warm white lighting systm instead high pressure sodium system. it has more color temperature than that lower 2000 hipr sod. you can see them on lots of streeets. it s better than that hipr sod. and save more energy.

europe began to adopt as well.

--

I really hanve seen the color of hipr sod like marked as S. even its color temp lower than 1900, nerther say higher up to 3200.

You have a keen eye CNP. Many of the people that claim we did not actually walk on the moon posed similar questions. In this instance there is a very sharp contrast and opposing shadows.

The photographer would have used fore-lighting to create the left running shadows. The pale sunlit background meets the fore-lit midfield and creates an edge that looks somewhat unnatural.

The image may well be enhanced but it seems authentic enough to me.

But I am a humble Ape!

I'm possibly misinterpreting the picture (again), but the shadows of the higher trees do not immediately look disproportionately longer than those of the lower trees. If that is right, it's a lamp that is very high up and quite distant. (Given the apparent slope of the hill and the northerly position, I'm not certain the moon ever appears high enough to produce these shadows, so my guess is either a working light on a very high gantry, or a source at the top of a nearby hill).

Correction or better ideas anyone?

Where I live, we often get orange back-scatter (such as you marked as "s") from low in the sky (i.e. on the far side from the setting sun, though often not absolutely opposite).

The "carpet" is probably snow as Europium suggests. The snow-bent conifers certainly look like strange rock structures in this light - and one or two of them may be just that.

These parts of Finland are as unusual in their geology, their climate and just about everything else as well. Unfortunately I haven't been to this particular location yet (perhaps it's something to look forward to).

Presumably there was/is an industrial town in Taiwan called "USA" (yep, all caps). The town used to go by another more traditional sort of Taiwanese name, but apparently the townsfolk all got together and decided that if their products were marked "Made in USA" they'd sell better!

For my part, I probably would've picked the name Germany or Japan, or something along those lines. Certainly not USA. Do we still manufacture anything here?

even half year is day and half year is night, if you stand on the ground. the sun is still

rising from east and down to west. even if you stay at nothern pole or southern pole spot.
the unique way is run after sun!

if your speed is as fast as earth rotation speed, the sun will stay in the sky forever. if

your speed is slower than the rotation speed, you will see the phynonimal that take place at pole spot. of cuse if your sppeed is faster than the rotation speed, the sun will rise from west. the fast spped your craft is the rapid rise the sun will be.
if a man takes a fast rocket flight according to my idea, the speed is 100times he will go back to his childhood after flight 2 or 3 mothes.

The critical angle speed is pi/12/3600 rad/s.

The film documentary by Michael Palin* was even better. You don't even need the language to like it/understand- he went around the globe meeting all sorts of people ( rarely speaking the same language) and it was a great cultural insight. He followed on with another series called 'Pole to Pole' which also had great film footage and cultural insight.

* Palin is one of the often spoken of Monty Python team of comedians. It probably doesn't get shown in China.

That book is also good fun though, as is the film of it with David Niven.
