PLC Simulator Software

03/20/2019 8:40 AM

Dear All,

I am seeking a PLC Program simulator for testing my ladder diagrams. Is there any free PLC program simulator software (like open source) available?

Thanks & Regards,

Kaushika

Many PLC equipment vendors have <...simulator...> emulator programs available; there certainly is one for Allen Bradley, for example (not an endorsement - other PLC manufacturers abound), for its ControlLogix and Compactlogix equipment ranges.

It would be surprising if these packages were available <...free...>, as each has cost many hours to produce and in such circumstances it would be foolhardy for a vendor to offer something for <...free...> as the costs of the development hours could not then be recovered through use of the product.

Generally, one gets what one is prepared to pay for. So pick up the phone, and get a quote, for that is the honourable thing to do.

Alternatively, it is quite possible to program simulation logic into the PLC program such that there is a virtual plant inside it, and then run it on a PLC in a development rig.

From my experience with Rockwell emulators, there are several hardware specific features that either are not covered, or modeled incorrectly, or do not function as intended. You may find that a free simulator even following IEC standards may perform to a lower level, leaving you to wonder if the simulation was worth the effort.

That being said, if you are a student or exploring the application of easy to understand Ladder Logic to machine control, the slightly snarky post by JohnDG does have some good responses. The most basic instructions should replicate well on most any industrial PLC.

There is also a proprietary emulator for Allen Bradley Small Logic Controller series.
