Vandal proof railroad crossing flashlights

10/10/2007 8:13 AM

We want installations of level crossing flashlights which are vandal proof. These will be located mostly in rural areas and hence the reason for security concerns. Power source preferably solar panels at quite a good height; flashing lights encased in steel mesh; battery and controller in vandal proof cubicle; and detector buried under the rail track 400 metres away from level crossing, to facilitate actuation of the flashlights and buzzer when train approaches. I would like you to recommend a system that is working elsewhere, which is vandal proof while maintaining high safety standards.

TXDOT.....at one time TX had more train/auto accidents than anywhere in the world annually. A large public campaign has called for guards and or lights at EVERY crossing in the state!

We had the same problem here in the UK, but since we installed CCTV cameras at these crossings the problem has diminished by a factor of 50. Spencer.

Hi C_Rummel3, Yes you are right, and a lot of them are hidden. Most Brits I know hate the damn things, they are complaining that no where these days can one find privacy, and I agree with them. If you travel from north to south of our country you are covered by a camera on every inch of the way, some of them even have a loudspeaker on them, and if you drop a peice of paper someone will shout at you to "Pick it up ". Here in the UK the police are taking peoples DNA at every opertunity, speeding, droping litter, you name it they will put you on the criminal files, there are even 600,000 children under 10 on them. Of course, here in the UK we have all read George Orwell's book 1984, and it is happening in the UK right before our very eyes. Any suggestions? Spencer.

Suggestion. Revolt! All the countries in the world are heading in the same direction, because "Big Brother IS watching". It's all about power and how your freedoms can be taken away.

The TV programme "Police, camera, action!" is prime-time viewing in the UK. Though it tends to concentrate on the antics of silly UK motorists, some footage is included about the USA's variant on this particular breed.

The UK market for security cameras is now beginning to dry up. There are more cameras per head of population than crimes per head of population.

In reading this whole thread... I am reminded of...

I come from a railroading family. My Dad who retired as an engineer in the late '80s commented that with the tunnage they hauled, it took over a mile to get a train to stop... and the yard limit signs were only out one mile.

My brother, on his first student trip as an engineer, had someone run a stop sign at a railroad track. The car was run several hundred feet down the track, and luckily the driver survived. He woke up about 3 days later in the hospital.

My dad ran over a kid on a trestle in the 50's. I learned this from my aunt after my dad died. It hurt him quite severely... it was a long time (like years) before he could go back to work, and after that, he could not stand the sight of blood. In the late 80's, helping him build a wall, I got a tick (insect) in my right forearm. I broke the things head off leaving the mouth parts imbedded. What was needed was to cut the mouth parts out(and put a Band-aid on it).Located in other parts of my body, I would have done it myself, but he couldn't do it.

BOTTOM LINE OF THIS IS!!

Anything we can do to save lives at railroad crossings is worth it. I am sorry if it might generate a few traffic tickets, but I would much rather see dollars, pounds, euro's going into traffic courts rather than deaths strung across railroad crossings.

The people driving the trains are also victims.

Sincerely

Bill

Vandal Proof ?!

It does not matter how complex you make things.

A determined vandal can always overcome each precaution you take.

Some may steal a car, and crash it into your lights.

Others may steal the solar panels and batteries.

If you put "Security cameras" in place, they can be damaged or stolen.

Even if you put your battery and controller into an underground concrete bunker, the cabling to/from the lights and solar panel is vulnerable, while the bunker could be flooded too.

It is unfortunate: Just do your best, and hope for the best too
