VFD - CSI /LCI

10/09/2019 9:03 AM

In VFD topology, does CSI (Current source Inverter) same as LCI (Load commutated Inverter)?

If they were the same, then why would they have different names?

They are similar in that they both use thrusters as the main power devices, but do not have the same topology or method of operation.

Yes. THYRISTORS. Damned spell checker on my phone auto-corrected it, twice, then for some reason I could not get back in to fix it. On my PC I have added all of these "special" industry terms over the years to the internal dictionary, but Apple doesn't let me do that.

Additionally, all LCI drives are CSI (Current Source Inverters), but not all CSI drives are LCI. You will only see LCI drives on extremely large MV synchronous motors where high dynamic response and low frequency operation is not required, whereas modern CSI drives can be used in those applications. All of the LCI drives I have encountered if fact were used as a way of soft starting these large MV motors, so once the motor was at speed the LCI was bypassed.
