Adiabatic Process Project

10/22/2007 12:02 AM

My daughter needs a working project on the adiabatic process for her college class. We are not sure what to do. Does any body have any ideas or suggestions? It's due next week.

Thanks!

there must be lots of appication on hand,

see your car, its generator has a adiabatic process when it works.

heat battle.

heat keeper material in building.

See Adiabatic Process at Wikipedia. The diesel engine relies on adiabatic heating to ignite its fuel. When air is compressed, its temperature increases. Ideal gases do it without modification of the "ideal gas law, pV = nRT."

Technically, "adiabatic" means "without gain or loss of heat," according to Webster's, but given that there ain't no such thing as a free lunch, and as far as I know, nothing's 100% efficient, I suspect that something like a diesel engine may suffice.

Adiabatic processes also figure into severe weather meteorology. Look into radiosonde observations (RAOBS), soundings, thermodiagrams, Skew-T's, parcel theory for starters. Theweatherprediction.com might be a good place to start.

  • All compressors including turbo-chargers of diesel engines compress air/gas adiabatically, at least theoretically. To improve the efficiency, multistage compressors with intermediate cooling are used making the process closer to iso thermal.
  • In pneumatic handtools compressed air expands adiabatically

any one of these can be taken up for the project

I long believed there to be a difference between positive displacement pumps/compressors and turbomachines in this respect. Have I always been wrong?

Hi webstermom7,get an old fashioned hand operated bike pump and a cycle wheel with tyre and tube.Blow up the tyre by pumping like mad.The pump barrel will get hot as the air is compressed, demonstrating adiabatic compression.Let the air out of the tyre at the valve, the valve will get cold, adiabatic expansion. QED.
