Speaker Wire Runs

10/22/2007 8:24 AM

I have a room already carpeted and want to add speakers to the back of the room. The problem is I already have the supply at the other end of the room.

Any good ways of running the cable from corner a to corner b under carpet. No access to room from underneath.

I take it, you don't want to see the cables!

Can you push the cable under the skirting board?

Are your walls hollow? (ie partition wall or the old style Lars and daub)

If hollow, can you fish down from the loft and take them over to the other wall and push them down that wall!

Worst care scenario would be to lift the carpet at the two sides (making sure that the floor joists are running in your favour, cut the floorboards on the joist and fish them through to the other side! Replace boards and carpet!

If the joists run across the route, then I would just stuff them under the skirting board!Have fun!

  • Peel back the carpet adjacent to a skirting board along the proposed route
  • Remove a section of the carpet underlay sufficiently wise to house the two cables side by side
  • carefully secure the cables in place in the gap - 'gaffer tape'?
  • reposition the carpet over the top.

Have fun!

Footnote: do not try this with cables carrying mains supply voltages, dear reader. These cables carry loads that can dissipate significant amounts of heat. They should be installed according to local building regulations and wiring codes. Flexible cords, in particular, need to be visible and of as short a length as is reasonably practicable.

Tip: a child's clockwork toy and some button thread can be useful in getting a draw-wire from one side of a ceiling- or floor-void to another, in the absence of a cable push-rod.

How long does the mouse survive before you get bored with it?

If the room has wall to wall and is held down with tack board tuck it under the quarter round moulding usually a void behind the edge of the carpet.

Please try this link, http://akamaipix.crutchfield.com/HTIG/2003HTIGArticles/Wiring.pdf

It shows a very detailed info on how to hide speaker wires. Page 9 practically answers your query.

I've done this at home, the carpet was held with gripper rods around the periphery of the room but there was enough space to tuck the speaker wire between the gripper & the skirting so that it was hidden by the carpet.

Do you have a wall socket at the end where the speakers are to go, or was that your "supply"?

If you have a power socket, there are many after market supplies of audio/video Tx and RX that you can buy for little money.....

There if flat speaker wire available that will work well under carpet. It is only about 1 or 1.5 mm high. If you fish that through under the carpet (time to buy an electrician's fish) then you should be all set with a nice direct route. You do want to try to keep the speaker wire as short as possible and approximately the same length especially if you want to do 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound, but I'm getting a little over the top now....

The edge of the carpet can be lifted and put back down, or the carpet can be slit and taped together (might want to get an installer to help - they have the tools) - or, you can look into wireless speakers.

- I have been waiting for Bose to produce a set, but good quality wireless speakers are available at a reasonable price.
