If you mean a commercially available ink to use in your inkjet... you're SOL. Thank the greens for banning the use of carbon black and replacing it with soy-based inks.

I print photos on an Epson 2200 printer and their ink is good enough that if I drop a photo in the mud...I can just put it under the faucet and rinse it off. It does NOT make the colors run/wash off.

That is water RESISTANT to me. I don't know how long a person could leave it under the water before problems, but that would be asking for WATERPROOF.

The Epson uses PIGMENT ink. I think the last HP Ani bought (K550?) even has water resistant inks in it.

As Mr Chevy points out printing on photo paper gives water resistance.

by industrial inkjet, it is assumed that you are printing at online production conveyors, after the filling machines? where the environment is wet or some water sprays on the product surface.

You have to specify what brand of ink jet printer you have. Different brands use different solvents, like Willett, Imaje, Marsh, Domino, Linx, Videojet, etc. Common solvents used are MEK (methylethylketone), ethanol or ethyl alcohol, isopropanol and ethyl acetate, and even just water.

Likewise, the surface of the material you are printing on, whether metal, plastic or glass, or type of laminates, (if you have a pouch or sachet pack) has to be known by the supplier. Normally your printer supplier would recommend or even sell you the ink as part of the deal, which are quite more expensive than if you buy direct from the ink stores. Solvents used are also part of the ink deal and in some cases more solvents are consumed than the ink itself.

Thanks to you all ppl for your input so far ... I'll specify my problem a lil closer. We use a SYTEX (kodak) printer in combination with a 7 color offset printer and print at a speed of about 250 m/min. We have to print a barcode that is water(rain) resistant. Kodak already supplied us with the best ink they have, but the printed result is still not satisfying... We tried to print a layer of see through ink over it, but still waterdrops make the code blurry...

So, any advice about a certain inkjet ink, or a certain see through ink to cover the inkjet ink, is highly appreciated.

I would suggest covering with a see-thru sticky plastic until you have found the right ink....

Check with Sericol Inks they have sone uv curables that will more than fit your application.

Try lacquer coating from Bosny USA after mild heating the printed material , i think there are lots of third party inks available for offset printer that are water as well as chemical resistance , we recommended our clients to switch over to Eco-solvent based printing machines as they are able to deliver print quality close to inkjets with no necessary pre/post treatments , UV inks also better option but quiet expensive , still you will have to risk your printer to third party ink suppliers if other alternatives don`t work out , as there are inks available for your current machine that offer water resistance , UV resistance , make sure you change your ink through proffesional service engineer and get warranty from ink supplier for compatiblity , vital components of your machines

The MIL Spec inks used by Videojet & others are completely water resistant (at least, they are on metal surfaces) I think that you can also get UV curing inks.

What make do you have , HP,Canon, Epson , Mimaki ,Dust,Brother , kodak,sharp , lexmark you get dye -sublimation , water based pigment , Eco-solvent , UV inks , oil based , acid inks.there are inks meant for thermal inkjet that have water resistance meant for textile logo printing ,you can also look for chinese suppliers also

You should note basic formulation for your inks that are compatible with your printer , check this polyurethane dye based inks ,you can approach following manufacturers
