The plasma torch is quite a bit faster but also is size dependent, ie. it comes in several different power levels rated for metal thickness. The Acetylene torch is only supplied in a couple of sizes. The plasma torch also cuts anything such as stainless or aluminum whereas the acetylene torch only cuts plain steel because it depends on oxidization burning.

You want to go plasma. You can get a good clean cut. Acetylene is crude.

Acetylene can cut faster if the tips on the plasma cutter are in need of replacing.

If it's thick material you'll at some point have to go with acetylene.

Plasma willbe faster adn cleaner. but oxy /acet still has its uses, particularly in portability and multitasking

What about a Thermic Lance for the really thick stuff?
