what is the best way to convert motor to generator?

Convert generator to motor and do re-engineering to convert back.

In the case of a DC permanent magnet motor, simply turn the shaft while taking current from the terminals.

DC permanent magnet motors can be found in children's toys and sacrificing one in order to experiment with the motor might be an attractive exercise?

Cor, that's quite a question, perhaps you could indicate what it is you want from the result, or what your starting point is! Or probab;y anthing in between!

A permanent-magnet motor will generate a voltage when you turn it's shaft, there isn't a lot to distinguish a permanent-magnet motor from a permanent magnet generator. If it's a D.C. motor it'll generate a (fairly) constant voltage and if it's an A.C. motor chances are you'll get an alternating voltage.

These tend to be relatively small, low power motors.

If you want something in the 'horsepower' range you'll find the starting point is a machine with field and armature windings, these can be self-exciting using residual magnetism but the chances are you'll need some management or control of the windings and it might not be as efficient as a purpose-built machine.

I'm conscious from the phrasing of the question that you may have a lot of research ahead of you.

If you have a three phase induction motor connected to a three phase supply, just fire it up then drive it with a mechanical input into its generating quadrant and you will generate synchronized three phase back into the mains. That is the best way.

But you didn't say what sort of a motor did you?

I thought you'd have to reverse the wires so the imputs were the outputs.

hey i need to make a workin model of wind turbine for a project i have proposed... i cud not get hold of any motors... can i generate power if attach turbines to the rotor of a small motor and put in a windy area??? i jus wanna show some volts being produced on a multimeter... is it possible???

Are you the same "Guest" asking questions and replying.

It is confusing. Suggest each "guest" must atleast write their name if the do not want to register or wish to keep themselves unknown.

what i know about electrical you could write on a micro chip with a sharpee. i'm a carpenter/ mechanic/ whatever pays the bills. so forgive my ignorance. i was just wondering if this type of conversion can be used to power or assist powering a home? also, since i have been interested in the attrempt, i was also wondering if one could be used to convert an automobile? are there cheaper ways than going to the market place to perform these tasks?

Re: converting electric motor to generator

Hi im Blair yes thats my name im 21 ive had been wondering the same thing, an have the answer to the best way is to get your hands on an electric motor an im not talking about a small toy i used an old belt motor from the factory i work at its fairly easy the bigger you go to make a wind mill. it powers the boat i live on now. An electric motor consists of coils of wire around a spinning magnet. In an electric motor, electricity is passed through the coils, which causes the magnets to spin. The spinning magnets and the axle provided power to whatever device used the motor. If you take the motor out of the device and spin the axle, it becomes a generator. makes it simple right good luck an please go green, its easy an helpful to your own wallet, hope this helped.
