"To The Horror Of Global Warming Alarmists, Global Cooling Is Here" is an opinion piece, not factual!

When they’re talking about the little ice age,...

The height of the Little Ice Age is generally dated as 1650 to 1850 A.D. The American Revolutionary Army under General George Washington shivered at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777-78, and New York harbor was frozen in the winter of 1780. Historic snowstorms struck Lisbon, Portugal in 1665, 1744 and 1886. ”

The little ice age cause where from natural source, in this case volcanoes.

it’s interesting that the affect of the dust blown up in the atmosphere had more cooling affect than the carbon released from the volcanoes.

now from the larger ice ages, it’s cause is related to Milankovitch cycles

https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2016-06-15/what-is-an-ice-age-explainer/7185002

in this article it states we are over due for a cooling cycle, and that it has already begun, but the effects was counter by global warming.

It’s interesting that because global warming is winning, that’s where the focus is at by the overreacting extremist,...

when in effect, there’s more going on and that is the balancing both. Whether it can be or not.

now,... this is my opinion... with the evolution of man... solutions may be presented to him, by what ever means, such as to advance civilization the use of fossil fuels... where man realizes this creates global warming And may be able to control,...

and then we begin to understand Milanovitch cyles, where there isn’t much that man control.

if Milanovitch cycle begin to accelerate,... maybe with more understanding, man can use the affects of global warming to offset the Milanovitch cycle.

then our only worry’s would be a super volcano erupting (yellowstone) or a large meteor strike. Both in itself wiping out mans existence.

just a thought...

I heard something very interesting today. In 2019, fewer EV's were sold in CA vs 2018.

It took a minute for that to fully sink in. Why? Because we're told that EV's are selling so well and in the nearby future, you won't be able to buy a ICE powered car.

The media has a way of "twisting" things to make a story. Yesterday, I was watching a rerun of California Gold - it's actually a really cool series. They were touring the Hearst Ranch (not the Hearst Castle, but the ranch). I told my better half that Hearst was known to "create" stories for his paper. I remember reading something to the effect of - bring me your best picture and I'll create the war. Fake news from a different era!

News in the rest of the country isn't bad, but in Los Angeles, it's a beauty contest. The stories are terrible and the facts are ... it doesn't matter, because it's entertainment!

This morning, my better half and I were having another CV conversation. She had a conversation with our son in law - her take was that this could be God's way of thinning out the population. So, I asked her how many people would need to die for the world to be thinned out. She said 1/2 of the people in CA would be a huge tragedy. I told her that's not even a tiny dent. 20M sounds like a lot and it is, but we have 8B people in this world. To put things into perspective, I told her that every person in the US could die and we would dent the world population by less than 5%.

I remember in high school, we had 200M + people in the US and 4B + in the world. World population has nearly doubled and we've grown by 50%. These numbers are mind boggling!

My location: Eastern Washington

Last year, we had a February that had record low temperatures and snowfall.

Two years before that, a whole winter that had record low temperatures.

Many of the temperatures are retrieved from stations based in major cities. The gerat amount of concrete in these cities retains heat. That is why we are getting a skewed result!

The Earth has been through many catastrophes, and the human race has always survived.

So why the hell are we still worried about this? Because it's just about the only issue that the liberal left can use and say "we are taking care of this. If you vote for me, I will take care of it"!

Can you say bullshite?

Milder here in Maryland too. But the jet streams play a huge part in the winter weather in this part of the United States. If the jet stream were to shift just to the east a little bit, we wouldn't get that Gulf of Mexico warmth and the temperatures would be 20 degF cooler.

I like to ski, but it's been lousy around this area. Haven't even attempted it in the last few years.

My heating bills were 30% less this winter. But the recent summers were not hotter either. In fact, here in Maryland we have not had a "heat wave" of any significance for three or four years. If this is climate change, I ain't complaining.

We've had a colder winter here in So Cal. We went to Laguna Beach on Sunday and it only got to 63. We stayed at a cool pub/restaurant until 1:00 am and when we got out, I was cold. I wore shorts and a thin cotton sweater. When we got to the car, we heated the seats - my guess it was around 48 or so that night.

Next Tuesday, they forecast a high of 54 for us. We're suppose to be 73! That's almost 20 degrees too low.

Please, bring us some global warming, please!

Just kidding, but the temps I posted are real and we are definitely below norms this year.

We had the coldest valentine's day in 70 years.

The lake levels are highest in 30 years.

We get Chicago weather.. warm / hot or cold can come and go at any season.

My local beach is crashing into the buildings nearby.. waterfront property always comes with risk.

Just look deep down in the Mediterranean sea?. Lots of lost civilization's from the ice age..

Brrr. Warm is good.

Climate change is natural.

Round and round.. what comes around goes around.

And trust me that it will get cold again.

You unfortunately display a serious lack of courage of your own convictions when you post anonymously.

If you wish to start a debate on such a contentious subject, at least be brave enough to identify yourself to the opposition.

You're communicating here with folk that are far removed from the easily led by the nose social media sect who now treat the climate change debate as a religion rather than a science, and who believe that the "emotion" of global warming/climate change/extreme weather - the names change as each successive theory is debunked - is more important than the reality.

In 1988, global warmist Michael Mann (co-producer of the now infamous hockey stick graph) predicted - among many of his failed predictions - that lower Manhattan would be under water by 2018 - I wonder how Wall street is managing to break stock market records with all of the brokers wearing scuba gear.

I suspect that future generations will look at this period of history with a sense of dismay that an otherwise erudite society, together with its media and political classes, could be so easily led astray by a relatively small group of extremists with their snouts in the trough of climate change hysteria, and the benefits that they alone gain from it.

Spades

As a response to the statement in your last paragraph, just look at TSLA stock. It closed yesterday at over $900/share or $166B in 2020 money! Worth more than McDonalds with over 37,000 stores, a huge worldwide presence and over 69M customers a day. While Tesla sold less cars in the US in 2019 vs 2020, while their expansion is to offshore sales. And Tesla lost money again in 2019 and most likely will lose money in 2020.

Re: Climate Change?

02/22/2020 2:24 PM

How long can we deny?

A better question is: What can we do about it?

I know, if each of us drives 4 days a week vs 5 days to work or raises the temp in our home by 2 degrees in the summer ... It doesn't work! If you believe in GW (I'm not sure and I don't give it much thought) then find a solution. But remember that it must be a global solution, where you can control the CO2 in India (they're more concerned about growth, overpopulation and lack of basics like food and clean water) and China (their focus is on growth at any cost and what to do with the Corona virus) while keeping South America from cutting down forests (you'll have to figure out how to feed the people without selling their natural resources and keep the corporations from seeking profits).

I started a post on this site asking if we can do anything about this politically agendized problem. The only real solution is to build a machine that removes CO2 from the atmosphere, but if it can be done (nobody has the technology or the money) what are the side effects? What if we freeze the planet by going too far the other way? Of we destroy the plant life and our ocean because CO2 is too low (plants do need CO2 to survive)?

I'm not going to lecture you on this subject - I think others have already done so. What I hope I did is create a thought process for you to follow before posting things like you did on this site.

Remember that there are some incredibly smart people on this site. They know a lot more than I do and they can smell a political agenda from miles away.

Re: Climate Change?

One other thing. You can have passion about solving a problem, but there are right ways to do it and wrong ways. When you make enemies of important people, you have a new front to fight. Elizabeth Warren found out when she started going after some big guns on Wall Street. I believe she was wrong, but that's my belief.

I applaud that kid Greta, for taking action on what she believes in. I don't like how she attacks people, but she's a little girl who has now made a name for herself. If she can harness her energy in the right way, she'll do something very important in her life. GW? I think she should ride the wave as long as she can, but I do see that the "movement" will lose tons of momentum with the next recession. Why? When the question is asked: Do I focus on trading in my ICE car for an EV or do I pay my mortgage and feed my family? I think the answer is obvious and yes, I do believe we're headed toward a recession - maybe sparked by the Corona virus? I don't know, but this expansion has gone on a bit too long and the "dead weeds" need to be pulled.

I bet she does.

I'm not a fan of hers, but I admire a teenager who can get a lot of people in the world to listen. If she's too bent on being green, I think she'll self destruct. If however she's handled properly, she has a great future ahead of her. Take on a worldwide challenge that has a solution. Or even a local problem that has lots of press coverage. Homeless problem in California? Human rights? Potable water?

It'll be interesting to see what happens to her.

And now . . . I'm surprised and humbled.

What a difference a few weeks can make.

But then again, the Her machine buried Bernie back in 2016 too. The current machine is too scared Bernie might actually get the nomination this time and have acted accordingly. As much as I vehemently disagree with just about everything he has ever uttered, I do respect him for being honest about it unlike many politicians who look at the audience in front of them at the moment, and then decide what they will say.

Yes, the only Mondale electoral votes were from Washington D.C. and Minnesota. But I seriously doubt CA and NY would ever go red these days. So in that sense, I don't think it would be THAT lopsided as it was in '84.

CA, NY or IL. Too many people who want freebies.

The other day, I saw Joe Biden blow up at a UAW worker at a plant in Detroit. Something about taking guns away from people. I was surprised how he responded. Not very presidential.

Mondale was from MN, wasn't he?

Re: Climate Change?

03/14/2020 4:37 AM

There were a number of times that I wanted to "take it outside" when I was a councilman. Things get heated and things are said in anger.

I don't know if you saw today's circus. Pelosi wanted to one up Trump, so she scheduled her press conference before his. In her normal snide manner, she jabbed him and the Republicans. I was very upset to see this, because this is one of those times when we all need to work together as America, not Blue or Red.

I am glad that Trump didn't play into them vs us. His last two speeches impressed me. He wasn't the usual "You're Fired" Donald. Instead, I saw a different man - someone who is a true leader. And what he did today with the CEO's and medical professionals was amazing. I believe his plan will work. We'll see how it goes next week.

Joe Biden is a real American, down to Earth guy. He'd be a good person to go fishing with or have a beer and BS. As president, you can't cause fist fights. I learned that as a councilman, I couldn't start fist fights - we're suppose to battle with words! That's what I was told. I'm not a tough guy by any means and I haven't got in a physical fight for a very long time (last time was back in college). Though I do get tongue tied and I want to "take it outside". Since I was a councilman, I've become much better battling with words. And the desire for a physical fight has diminished - considerably.

So, if Joe Biden becomes our president, he'll need to keep his cool. He can't get in people's face - it's not what our president should do.

I didn't see that circus. And that is what politics has become. Complete with freak shows on the side. I try to let the news of politics age so it has a chance to reach some level of maturity. The election isn't tomorrow, so there is no rush. In my opinion, Pelosi has totally blown all her political capital with her petulance. She is tired goods and for the good of the country, it is time for her to be sent to pasture.

She won't go. She screwed Schiff - he's the fall guy. Impeachment failed and Schiff looks like an idiot. He's running in the district right next door to me. A good friend of mine lives in that district and he didn't even know that Schiff was his congressman!

She's also tight with Newsome, our governor. He's the guy who told judges to let criminals go on their own recognizance, because they don't have money for bail and the system isn't fair to them! If you're a criminal and you don't have money, don't worry, the judge will let you go and you only have to promise to show up on your court date.

There's all kinds of other crazy things he's done and the people who care have given up trying to change things. We just go about our day trying to make ends meet.

Anyway, good reading your posts.

Totally agree!

The latest Pelosi stunt is using the Virus Bill to finance abortion:

https://www.frc.org/updatearticle/20200313/virus-bill

From the article:

The revelations shouldn't have caught anyone by surprise, but when a White House official broke the news that Pelosi tried to bury taxpayer-funded abortion in the stimulus bill, even MSNBC was stunned. Openly liberal host Joy Reid didn't hold back her amazement, tweeting, "Wow... @kasie just reported that Republicans' objections to the House Democrats' emergency coronavirus bill include issues related to abortion. What does that have to do with COVID19...?"

Exactly.

He made the mistake of trying to make a name for himself at the expense of someone more powerful and with a very strong team.

I don't think he could've done it himself. My guess is that he was brought in by Pelosi - to do her dirty work, since she knew it was suicide if it failed. Throw Schiff under the bus.

Since the impeachment, has Schiff been mentioned in anything else?

I have an ex friend who was involved in some radical movement. He told me that the plan is to make up whatever seems feasible. Mix lie with fact, then watch what sticks. Then run with it. Don't think about who it harms, because the cause is much greater. And there will always be casualties, so keep the pressure up. Seems like he was taught by Schiff and his cohorts.

I'm sorry you have live in that circus. It is a sad day when people don't even KNOW who their representative is in Congress.

I had lived in California for about four years back in the mid-to-late 80's when I was in the Army at the Presidio of San Francisco. It was fairly expensive back then, but tenable. Now, it's outta sight. Never mind the politics.

While I enjoy visiting California for the natural beauty and recreational activities, I'm sorry to say that I would never want to live there.

I'm dug in here. If I weren't, I'd finish up my career and retire out of state.

My business partner bought a gorgeous piece of land in Idaho - he's going to build his knock out dream house and in 5-10 years, he's heading north.

One of my clients called me a couple months ago from the Ft Worth area. When I asked her what happened, she said she had enough of it. Her husband is staying here while they sell their two homes. Then he's off to Texas!

Another client just moved to Indianapolis. She grew up there and her mom needs physical assistance, so she moved back. She told me she forgot how nice, friendly, real and sincere the people in the midwest are. I asked if she's coming back and she said no. She can't afford to buy anything out here and she only has about 10 years to retirement, so she'll live in her mom's house until she passes, then she'll retire there.

A co-worker just moved to Las Vegas. His rent here in LA is too high and he can't save any money. So, he got a job at Chase and he left for Vegas about a month ago. Rent is less than 1/2 of what it is here.

Politics in SF is the most absurd I've ever heard. No logic. Just trying to please the takers, so they'll vote for him.

A few months ago, I saw a video of a cop chasing a kid. The kid was a passenger in a car, when the police pulled him over. The officer had his gun drawn and told the kid to put his hands up and to back up toward him. The kid got right near the cop, then decided to take off. The cop chased him, then the kid jumped a fence into a daycare center and the cop shot him. The mother and father of the kid is suing the police department. The department said the shooting was justified. The kid has a previous record for firearms plus he's in a kids daycare center. I think this was somewhere in Bakersfield or in the San Joaquin valley.

Yes, great place to visit. No longer a great place to live.

I understand about being dug in. After all, I'm still living in Maryland after 23 years. Good job. I live 5 miles from the office. It takes 10 minutes to drive to work. On my worst commute, I get three red lights. If I took the highway (US-50/US-301) I might save 30 seconds off my usual commute time.

But . . . . .

When work is done, I'm outta here. Too many uptight people, always in a rush. I've lost my patience for rude people who think their priority is the ONLY thing that matters.

Life is too short to be in such a rush.

It's funny how people are. Rushing to get places, with the attitude of what they're doing is more important than anything else!

Somewhere, it became important to show that you're better than your neighbors, friends and co-workers. Live on the right street. Send your kids to the right school. Join the right social clubs/networks. Be seen at the right restaurants. Drive the right car. Wear the right clothes and for women, the right purse. Vacation at the right place, etc!

What ever happened to doing things and owning stuff that you truly like?

Okay, I'm off my soapbox! I'm gonna leave my 12,460 sq foot house in The Colony in Malibu, jump in my Ferrari La Ferrari wearing my Patek Grandmaster Chime, dressed in my Kiton suit, Eton shirt and Testoni shoes, to pick up my son at Stratford, then drop him off at The Ranch, where my wife is enjoying another day at the spa. Oh shoot, I forgot to bring my wife's Hermes Croc purse - she never takes it with her when she goes to the spa. And I have to call Urasawa for a reservation for dinner tonight - the last time we dropped in, they actually made us wait for a table! Darn, where's my Vertu??? I need to make a call!

Too late is if you get fed up and leave without her.

The right temperature is 70 for me, but others may prefer it a little warmer or cooler.

And dying is one of the guarantees in life.

The things that really bother me are pollution and deforestation.

The oceans are full of plastic and other trash, with the biggest polluters being China and Indonesia.

Even if we are "warming", I think that this planet still has enough "ballast" that ecosystems will die out in some places, but others will form and flourish elsewhere. Life on Earth is very adaptable, and species come and species go.

If there as one thing that would help most, it would be stopping the pollution of our oceans.

Re: Climate Change?

Bottom line - people are slobs. Not all, but a lot. When I walk in LA (city) or the San Fernando Valley, I can't believe how much trash is on the sidewalk or curb! It's terrible. Yesterday, when I pulled up to a parking spot at my office, some loser left two cups in front of the parking block. There's a trash can less than 50 feet away!

Trash gets dumped on our streets and then finds it's way to our sewer system, where it continues on it's path to the storm drain at the Pacific Ocean. I love the Heal the Beach program - people walk the beach with trash bags - they pick up tons and tons (literally) of trash. Then a few days later, slobs leave trash on the beach again.

We had a clean up day in our community, where we organized groups of volunteers (kids and adults) to clean up dirt lots, streets and the main road into town. The s@&$ that people dump is disgusting. Trash bags full of garbage - they're too cheap to pay for trash service, so they throw it into the ditch! We pulled out over 2 dozen old tires, yup people are dumping them, because tire shops charge people to dispose of their old tires. Liquor bottles, diapers, papers, losing lottery tickets, cigarette butts (yes, in a rural, high fire risk area), and some pretty bad drug paraphernalia. We found heroin stuff under an old oak tree; at least 24 dozen used lighters, metal spoons, cotton balls, cigarette filters and syringes. Old 5 gallon paint containers (with paint still in them), dirty clothes, kids toys and building site trash.

Sanctuary cities! Don't get me started!

The liberal/leftist management of those cities are criminally neglecting their oath of office.

It's not to help people either because you know what???...<shhhh!> (they're low on funds!!)

Margaret Thatcher once said that: "The trouble with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money".

Instead of trying to help homeless people, it's easier to not help them and tell them that they can relieve themselves where they want, and accomodate their drug use.

More directly as a reply to: Yesterday, when I pulled up to a parking spot at my office, some loser left two cups in front of the parking block. There's a trash can less than 50 feet away!

In the men's restroom at several places I have worked, there is usually a large trashcan(s) (30 gal or more) right underneath the paper towel (PT) dispensers. Even so, there are always used PTs lying around the trashcans on the floor, when the trashcans are far from full!

What are they thinking?

Scenario 1:

<ghghghg-clack> towel dispensed

<gzh> tears off towel

<crkyrrysh> drying hands

<fffth> throws used PT behind shoulder, not caring where it should land, much less about littering

Scenario 2:

<ghghghg-clack> towel dispensed

<gzh> tears off towel

<crkyrrysh> drying hands

<fffth - phhh> goes to throw the used PT into the trash, but it sticks for a multimillisecond, and lands on the floor before he can catch it. He just decides to leave it there on the floor.

Scenario 3

Man walks into restroom and, seeing nobody else is around, he pulls used PTs from the garbage can and strews them around it, making men seem like slobs.

Which scenario do you go with?

Sanctuary state - that's where I live.

Last year in July, I drove across country (from New York to California). I think we saw 2 homeless people from New York to Nevada. Then we arrived in Lake Tahoe and the homeless showed up. We drove down the 395 and we didn't see any homeless, but when we got back to LA County, we saw homeless everywhere!

I agree, let them run rampant, but only in a designated area. There's some BLM land just outside of the Salton Sea - it's called Slab City and people who want to get off the grid go there. Some stay for the winter, while others make it their home. I say we sent them all to Slab City. Provide a soup kitchen(s), some medical help, psych help, port a potties, a place to get their mail, some sort of bank to cash checks, some stores (liquor and 7/11's), church and let them govern themselves. Drugs - no worries let them do what they want. Coroner crew to take the dead away. Use the funds that cities/counties/state is using on the homeless to fund the program - one new tent per year - a big hole to throw away all the trash and a promise that they can live whatever life they want, so long as they stay within the boundaries. Oh yeah, if they don't go to Slab City, then they have to abide by the rules of the city where they're living, which includes a vagrancy law. So, the choice is to go to Slab City or straighten up and be a part of society.

Regarding your question, I choose Scenario 4. Put a camera up with a video monitor just outside the bathroom. The camera will be pointed at the person's face and it will also show where the paper towel falls. If someone wants to be a slob, I think others should know.

I really feel sorry for the homeless. They are there for usually understandable reasons.

When people are dependent on the Government for their very survival, they will not love the Government! They subsist on a pretty low subsistence allowance. Very few people can accept this. The vast majority however, will either try to get gainful empoyment OR will be continually agitated about their situation. That's why, when a politician running for office promises unlimited health care, free college, jobs for everyone, etc.; They will mostly vote liberal. It's just self-preservation, but it is a vote segment that leftists count on. Just because socialism hasn't worked in every society where it has been implemented doesn't mean that it can't work! We just need to do it the right way and don't make any mistakes!

Re: Climate Change?

03/23/2020 9:01 PM

About 8 years ago or so, I was looking into buying a rental house for the specific purpose of housing homeless vets. My business plan was to use the income from the residents to pay for expenses and whatever was still needed, I'd pitch in the rest.

I spoke to a local homeless vet organization and they were so happy I was going to do it. They said the need is so great and very few are willing to help. Made me feel like I could make a difference. They said that they have people to refer (homeless vets) and I wouldn't have trouble filling the home. Excellent!

I had actually made an offer on the house and we were ready to start escrow. I called the homeless vet organization and asked for a few names and phone numbers, so I could speak to them - I thought I'd have to turn people down, so I wanted to have everything set up by the time escrow was closed. I lined up my work crew and had my list of supplies. I was very excited - scared and excited, because I've never done anything like this.

Nothing from the homeless vet organization, so I made another call to them. This time I reached the man I had originally spoken to. He told me that he's been trying to reach the homeless vets for me and he hasn't had any luck. He had a dozen or so on his list and none would respond back. Not good!

My better half and I went down to Westwood (UCLA area) and spoke with many homeless men. I told them about the home and then gave them my business card (I made one up for homeless vet housing). They seemed thrilled that I was doing this for them. I asked them to call me so I could put them in a room - I would be closing escrow in about a month, so don't wait too long. NOTHING! NOT ONE PHONE CALL!

I was disappointed, so I spoke to a friend who works with homeless people. His advice to me was to drop the project. He said that most of the vets who don't want to be on the street aren't. There are plenty of vet organizations (he knew the one I was working with) who help as much as they can, but the guys don't want the help. There's a program where a vet who is in financial trouble can get food, help with utilities, rent and trips to the VA. He told me that the ones who are homeless choose that lifestyle. They still get their checks, they don't have to answer to anyone, they can drink as much as they want or do whatever drugs they want. He told me that we think that living in a tent is horrible, but for these guys, it's absolutely okay with them. They prefer it! And if I was able to get them into the home, he said that most would be gone in the first few days if not a month.

I countered with - wouldn't it be nice to have a clean, warm bed, knowledge that they were going to get three meals a day, it would be safe, they'd have time to hang out with other guys, watch some TV, play pool, etc. I had a plan to have a pastor come on Wednesday and Sunday. There would be drug/alcohol abuse programs. I'd have a psychologist come by to have them talk about stuff that's bothering them and to give them coping skills. I'd bring county agencies come in to give them anything they needed. They could go back to school, take occupational classes, get their GED, etc. I'd also have a mentoring program, where they could mentor a kid - maybe they'd even get a job doing it. This was all part of my plan to get these guys back on their feet, to feel good about themselves and to live a productive life.

I spoke someone in our county supervisor's office. She thanked me for my plan, but she told me it wouldn't work as I had thought. She told me that there are many county programs and they have a hard time getting the vets off the street. She told me the only way it really works is to give them everything and require very little in return. That convinced me that I should gave up on the idea. I never bought that house - my mistake, because I could've used it as a regular rental, however knowing myself, it was best that I didn't open a homeless vet home. I would've been very let down.

I didn't know you were so involved. As a vet myself, I thank you. I think that the biggest thing that keeps homeless vets from accepting help is shame.

I'm not going to get into it right now, but I believe that's what keeps so many isolated, not trusting help and thinking that they are morally deficient for recieving it.

That's also what I was told. Many of these guys are embarrassed. They don't trust and become isolated. They don't feel good about themselves and they never thought they'd be living on the streets. I get it.

My first job out of college was as an engineer with the Dept of Navy. I was a civilian working at a Navy Base. The guys were great to work with. Regular guys! No worries about being PC - unless there was a female around. Just don't go out after work with them, because they'll drink you under the table, literally! Thinking about it, I could see some of them becoming homeless - yes, I certainly can and for the same reasons you state.

I appreciate the sacrifices that our service men and women make. During times of war, many unthinkable things happen. A good friend of mine was in Viet Nam and he had told me he's ashamed of many of the thing he did. He didn't tell me the specifics, but he said they were pretty bad - I never asked. I remember sitting down with him one evening and he was telling me about his buddy, who died in his arms. He said he felt so helpless - he was really sad. He told me the story - he ran to his friend and pulled him to safety. I asked how many times he had done something like this with others and he told me it was many times. They took care of each other and any one of them would do it if he was hit! I was amazed how selfless these guys are! I'm not sure how it came to me, but I told him he's a hero and he should be proud. He said Oh No - it doesn't make up for what he did. He didn't get it! I told him that terrible things happen in times of war and people do things they shouldn't, because of anger. It's not right, but it happens. However, it doesn't take away from the fact that he's a hero! All those men who he did save have families and wives and kids - they don't know who he is, but they know that someone, a HERO, saved their son/brother/father/husband! He didn't do it for the glory - he did it, because it was the right thing to do. He's a pretty big guy and the tears just came. I felt that I should bring up more stuff, since he was open. We talked about his dad. He told me some pretty bad stories - his dad beating his mom. Then the one time when he stood between his mom and dad. His dad beat him really bad, then threw him out of the house. He lived under a boat in the back yard. His mom would sneak food to him every day. When he was old enough, he joined the army to get away. He told me about the day he set foot back on US ground. He was wearing his uniform and he walked into a bar. Some hippie spit on him and called him a baby killer. He told me the only thing he remembers is that he thought he was punching his dad in the face! Well, he beat the crap out of that jerk - it was really bad. When the policeman asked what happened, he told him the story and the cop sent him home.

For the next few weeks, we talked every night. I told him that his dad most likely learned his behavior from his dad - yes, his grandfather was also a heavy drinker. We talked about forgiveness. He had to forgive his dad - not forget, but forgive him. And his mom too, for not protecting him from his dad. And that his mom most likely stayed in the marriage because of her upbringing. And to forgive himself for all the things that he had done. He's a religious guy, so I told him that he needs to forgive God - for all the pain that God gave him.

You know, my buddy stopped drinking. He told me he wanted to get in touch with his daughter. I helped him find her and he got in touch with her. He talked to her a lot and in a month or so, she invited him to stay with her in Washington. He moved up north and he has his daughter and his life back.

I was hoping that I could help other vets. I really thought I could make my homeless vet project work.

Wow, that really was a major undertaking on your part to make a difference in somebody's life. As a vet, I

you.

I think it may be more nuanced than shame or embarrassment. For vets and others who are habitually homeless, my understanding is that it stems primarily from mental health issues more so than availability of resources (money, housing, etc.) to address homelessness.

In the old days, those folks were housed in state institutions where they received care. But we were heartless back then and as we became more enlightened, we freed all those people so they could live on the street instead.

Thank you for your service! Your hard work and sacrifice has given us the great country we live in!

It must've been a couple years ago, I attended a local gathering on homelessness. Our county supervisor gave a talk about the homeless problem in general - not specific to vets. She said that we need to do something ASAP or it's going to get out of control. She was working with the state to define mental health a medical necessity. What that would do is allow professionals to assess the mentally ill on the street and require them to be taken care of until the mental illness was healed.

She used the analogy of someone in a bad car accident. If you're injured the medical professional can require you to accept medical help, ie go to the emergency. You can't override the decision, it's theirs to make and you have to abide. So in the case of the mentally ill, the patient can be require to get help.

So, the first part is getting them off the street, cleaned up and in a safe place. I'm good with that. My question is where will we get the rooms/beds to house all these people?

I don't think the bill passed, or if it did, it's not being enforced.

Homelessness is a tough nut to crack. How do you balance freedom with 'forcing' someone into care, given that mental health is a largely a perception by the 'majority'.

If someone isn't an immediate danger to themselves or others, who am I to say that they should not be living in a tent or under a bridge?

It ain't easy.

The homeless problem is getting out of hand here. 50 blocks of a terrible mess just south of the Arts District and Little Tokyo. It's so sad to see this - I wonder how we got here and WHY nothing is being done.

That truly is a sad situation. Not sure what it will take to generate the political will to end the insanity. The People have to get pissed off enough to get their leader's attention and someone with the testicular fortitude to fight and weather the legal challenges to cleaning up the streets from the fine folks at the ACLU.

I've driven through there many times and it's unbelievable. 50 blocks of this - some are worse than others, but there's a lot of people living like this.

I was deeply upset when our state put the plastic straw issue over the homeless problem. They think that ignoring it will make it go away. I heard it's bad in San Francisco too.

Is it because of the cold or the heat? Too much rain? Too little rain? Too much snow? Not enough snow?
