Cable Secure to Junction Box

03/10/2020 10:29 PM

long long ago, the Bell System used a cable clamp to assure that power lead to their customer-premises devices (speakerphones, modems, etc) were secured to the center screw of an outlet box. the device was two pieces - one encircled the power cord, the second went parallel to the plug and was held by the junction box cover; the two pieces were loosely riveted together.

we have a situation where the plug for a building router is plugged into a ceiling junction box - and we don't want the plug to be shaken out of place (we are in earthquake country).

has anybody seen (or does anybody remember) these devices? i haven't seen one since the 1970's.

i like the first choice - adaptable to various sizes of plug, etc. second requires paying somebody to change out the socket, but it's possible, third won't keep a plug in the socket. where did you get the first choice, or did you make it?

You could just make something like this 'Z' shaped clamp....

not to scale

i wrote to lockinplug via their website.. we shall see. i can't use a twistlock plug because there is another device sharing the duplex outlet and we can't futz with it. still intrigued by the plastic gizmo. fortunately, i dont need this to be kidproof, just earthquake secure!

OK. So with the clamp arrangement not shown here the plug stayed in the socket and the tug was so strong that the cable broke 3in from the plug, leaving frayed copper at less than IP2x hanging off the wall with alternating current available. What happened next?

Isn't it safer for the plug to come out of the socket instead?

If that's the case, then your kid is Superman, and can't be harmed by electricity...

unquestionably, we dont want to expose live conductors, and that is probably why the device i remember has been discontinued.

in my case, with the socket 20 feet above a garage, the issue is not safety but security.

i think the solution is a cable clamp screwed to the plate, and one or more ty-raps securing the cord in position.

thanks all!

Silicone caulk will keep it in place and rip out cleanly if needed.

or... Upgrade the outlet to a $5 commercial duty version and you shouldn't need to modify anything.

Caulk is an interesting idea. the outlet is already commercial grade, it *should* have strong springs, but this is belt and suspenders. thanks

The most reliable receptacle is the Hospital Grade receptacle.

They should also meet The Federal Specification W-C-596.

It will have a green dot on the receptacle identifying it as hospital grade.

They must meet a 10 pound pullout resistance for 24 hours.

They have bifurcated contacts, which connect to both sides of the cord prong when inserted, instead of the normal single side.

Insist on a Nylon cover plate, which is nearly indestructible.

Use with a 90 degree plug and strain relief on cord.

Install a single hole cable strap with Velcro strap around the strain relief.

This combined with the pull out guard cover, similar to the one suggested by SE is the best you can get without using a twist lock plug.

This is your belt, suspenders, jock strap, bib, 3 point safety harness, crash helmet, shoulder and knee pads and adult diaper for your application.
