Winter is here and so is the common cold!

10/28/2007 7:36 AM

There is nothing more irritating than the common cold, runny nose, dry throat, head aches and a tired body! From what I gather, there is no real cure for this, only rest and plenty of liquid! How about your grandmothers remedies! Anybody have any good remedies that have been passed down through the ages!

The remedy I use is Hot milk with whiskey and honey! Although this does not cure anything, If drank in large quantities does make you feel better!

Here is your chance to brag about your grandmother and her amazing brews!

Hmmmm don't talk to me about colds etc.... for many years I've not had a single one, maybe an odd sniffle, but this last month I've had 2 humdingers of colds....

I'm sitting here coughing and spluttering like stinky pete!!!

My remedy is to rummage in the medicine cabinet for those old prescription painkillers preferably codeine ones and take them washed down with real ale in copious quantities....

It doesn't cure it but boy you don't know you've got it!!!

John

PS the above is not a recommended course of treatment!!

Have you noticed that the new OTC cold medicines are not as effective as they seemed to be? Check the ingredients and you will often find that they have changed the ingredients (or the relative amounts). This has often been done to meet governmental regs, or to reduce costs. I recently saw an article on a large medical site on the web concerning studies by the pharm companies. For example, I believe it is pseudiphedrin that has been tightly controlled by US govt regs because it is used to make crystal meth. The removal of the pseudephedrin from numerous medications to allow them to be sold more readily has resulted in a much poorer quality medicine. In several cases, the reported numbers were 25-40% as effective as the original meds. Wonderful!!!

It is not uncommon for a company to produce a product that use xxxx amount of an active ingredient and establish a consumer base. Then, to later lower the amount to xx amount while charging the same price. Next is the intro of the max strength. The original amount, xxxx, plus 10% at an added cost of 30% additional to the original.

They will also reduce package contents for products such as cereals, rice, margarines etc. while not changing the package size.

Marketers profit from our trust that change to an existing product won't occur in a deceptive manner.

Hot Tea with whiskey, honey and lemon. Wrap yourself in a warm blanket, get into bed and sweat it out.

Red wine warmed up with honey and cloves. "Repeat often" climb into bed and rest.

For weak stomachs during a cold: buttered toast broken into small pieces and placed into a bowl. Cover with warm milk.

Plenty to eat and drink and get to bed... a day off work in time can save a week off.

I once dragged myself in to test a vital Air Traffic Control System which was due for delivery...did the job but...ended up off for a week with chronic sinusitis...got back to work..of course it hadn't been delivered. I vowed never again!

I hate those pillocks who 'soldier on' by going into work...do sod all 'cos they have a cold' and then give it to everyone else!

(if in doubt I apply the golf test...If I feel well enough to play golf ...I'm well enough to work, and vice versa)

The hot lemon and honey works well...Mrs Cat makes me eat loads of vitamin C if I have a cold. (All men are hypocondriacs I am reliably informed )

PS...This Consultation is $50 please

I caught mine at about two in the afternoon, yesterday! So yesterday I went for the 'hot milk, whiskey and honey, but plenty of it' approach! slept like a wink but today I suffered more so I went for the plink plink fizz washed down with lots of rum and honey! I hope I sleep ok tonight!

There was a saying that went something like 'fast a fever, feed a cold' (I may have it back to front but you get the gist! Any truth in this?

Anybody remember kalean and morphine? What's kalean?

<What's kalean?>

A spelling mistake. Try 'kaolin' instead. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaolin#Uses

I was going to try and put a couple of electrodes up my nose to see if I could generate electricity! There is plenty of electrolyte up there! I may have a challanger for the cat piss yet!!! While your patented cold cure may work, I Have my doubts that it could cure the parrot cage effect! As you can see, the effect of this virus is quite unique in so much as it only gets worse!

mix a shot of whisky, a shot of brandy and a shot of gin with some lemon juice and a tablespoon of honey. eat some peanuts or some cheese before of after depending on how you feel. That should take care of it! repeat as necessary

My olde grandad had a really good way to treat a cold.

Take a candle and a bottle of whisky to bed, light the candle and pour the whisky, keep on drinking until you see two candles and then blow them both out and go to sleep...

John.

I use hot water, Whisky and honey - never milk, as that dilutes the effects!

The latest "secret" ingredient is a few drops of essential oils well known for their therapeutic properties, and it even tastes good.

(I use a blend called "Thieves": Ingredients: Clove† (Syzygium aromaticum), lemon† (Citrus limon), cinnamon† (Cinnamomum verum), Eucalyptus radiata† and rosemary† (Rosmarinus officinalis CT 1,8 cineol).

† 100% pure therapeutic-grade essential oil.)

My family has completely switched from OTC drugs to essential oils also. Usually a hot tea, made with filtered hot water, lemon, honey, and oils does the trick for cold symptoms. We've found DoTerra to have the best quality
