Let's Share Hand Sanitizer Rub Formulation

03/14/2020 3:39 PM

Hi everyone,

I think it would be very helpful if we share different compositions to create a thick hand sanitizer as it would be appreciated in the wake of (Covid-19 Corona Virus)

As for the first step, I wanna share the formulation recommended by WHO, the formulation follows;

To produce final concentrations of isopropyl alcohol 75% v/v, glycerol 1.45% v/v, hydrogen peroxide 0.125% v/v:

Pour into a 1000 ml graduated flask:

  1. isopropyl alcohol (with a purity of 99.8%), 751.5 ml
  2. H2O2 3%, 41.7 ml
  3. glycerol 98%, 14.5 ml

Top up the flask to 1000 ml with distilled water or water that has been boiled and cooled; shake the flask gently to mix the content.

Only pharmacopoeial quality reagents should be used (e.g. The International Pharmacopoeia) and not technical grade products.

The outcome of this formulation is thin spray-able hand sanitizer, that can be used for stuff you use most, mobile phone, keyboard etc.

Can anyone share a formulation that can be used as a viscous hand sanitizer ??

I went to one of the Latin owned dollar type stores that my son and I get a kick out of.

They still had all the regular supplies and no crowd. Mind you it's on a meter street, but worth noting.

Oddly it's the humorously named toilet papers that drew is in years ago.

Hmmm, its just vodka as simple as that. And we have plenty.

Smells nice though.

I gargle vodka when I have sore throat and mouth sores and its gone for 3 days. It works every time.

NO! At least two of the major brands of vodka have made announcements to the contrary: Standard vodka is 80 proof (40% alcohol); for disinfection purposes, the solution needs to be at least 60 % alcohol (120 proof, in liquor terms).

You cant ingest 120 proof isopropyl. 80 proof ethanol is enough especially to bacteria, fungus, virus in the throat.

Try it, and your mouth goes numb gargling it 5 minutes. It works well with inflamed mouth sores. Feels cleqn.

The Title of the thread refers to hand sanitizers, not gargles. The containers of both 70% and 91% isopropyl alcohol both specify "For External Use Only"

It might be useful if the ingredients were commonly available, and the units of measurement were convenient for the average homeowner. How many people do you know that have a 1000 ml graduated cylinder handy?

For disinfectant purposes, the precision of measurements can't possibly need to be so precise! 750 ml should be close enough for the isopropyl alcohol (assuming one could find a source for 99.8% pure stuff). Of the few people that do have a 1000 ml graduated cylinder handy, I'd wager that only a small percentage (if any) of those folks are capable of reading the liquid level to a precision of 0.1ml.

I can't be quite so certain about the "pharmacopoeial quality reagents". I don't know what contaminants might be in technical grade chemicals, but I strongly suspect that technical grade ingredients would disinfect just as well.

It's nit-picking, but I dislike the use of the term "reagents", because these ingredients aren't reacting with each other to produce something else, unless I'm mistaken.

Technical grade ingredients serve good sanitisation, so in a time of scarcity, using technical grade ingredients is ok. No one's gonna ingest a sanitiser, and IPA is alsonot for ingestion even with a pharmacopoeia grade.

I have a method that I used several years ago when I worked in a company that produced live bacteria for soil Bio-remediation.

It simply consisted of silver particles carried in deionized water.

Surfaces that had become contaminated were sprayed down with this solution and then wiped dry. Previous to cleansing, the bacterial count was TNTC (To Numerous To Count), after cleansing the count was barely detectable. The surface would remain sterile for several days afterward. It didn't matter whether the contaminant was bacterial or viral silver solution killed them all equally well.

The silver solution was produced by immersing two strips of silver about 1/8 inch wide by 12 inches long in a gallon (or more) of deionized water. A power supply set to 30 volts is attached to silver electrodes the silver solution is complete when the current drawn thru the solution reached 20 milliamperes. This takes about 20 minutes depending on the purity of the water

If a light is shined thru the solution you would see the silver particles suspended in the water.

I still use this technique when I have to work in a contaminated area.

For personal use I connect 4 batteries (9 volt each) in series to produce the 30 volts. and monitored the current using an $8 el cheapo multi-meter. Silver Production takes about 20 minutes. Each quart lasts for about a month before the silver settles out of solution. Great for hand washing or on cut and scrapes.

In India, they are now advising not to overuse sanitizers!! And not to use masks unless you really need them.

A simple solution would be to keep things as dry as possible, have your living areas well-ventilated and wash your hands thoroughly with a decent soap as and when needed. And, supplement your diet with plenty of vitamin C.

I am no expert in this. But, just wanted to share.

And, as President Trump is doing, join your hand in a 'namaste'. ;)

Thank you Deepak W! I think that is wise advice! So many in my own country (US) have not seen our President do that! The major news networks do not want him seen in a positive light!

Now, when we have a president that is trying to get our country back to independence, getting us stronger in standing up to nations that despise us. Why do we pay money to them? Yet we do. Trump is fighting this. Don't listen to the US mainstream media (ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, NY Times, WA Post, and so many more. They, along with the mostly socislist democratic party, hate Trump with a burning hatred. I support him.

I am 62yrs old and only in the past 7 years or so have I seen your land and your people on video shows. What a marvelous land, wildlife and history of your people!

If i were able, I would choose the Western Ghats as my first destination!

namaste

Is it political if it's the truth? Is the truth not welcome here?

Does it not concern you that a particular political party is deceiving the citizens of its country?

Maybe just go to the nearest garage and buy E85 from the bowser, though the other 15% may be a problem. Warning don't smoke and sanitise else you could have a hot reception but still Corona Virus can't take heat so twice as effective.

All you need is the emulsifier used in Napalm and you have the semi solid sanitiser or maybe just use Napalm.

Pioneers crossing the prairie in wagon trains put a silver coin in the water barrels to keep the water fresh. This is old technology.

I don't know where it originated, but it worked then and should work now.

Copper is also effective at destroying bacteria.

And zinc, which is now being used with Quinine in S Korea to treat Covid19.

Most American coins once had pure copper,or high silver content, making them effective in preventing spread of diseases.

Poor people, that had only ""two pennies to rub together" were protected more so than the richer class, who would throw pennies away to keep from carrying them.

Coatings with silver/and/or copper are being used in coatings for public areas, such as handrails, escalators, elevators, door handles, etc.

It may be a case of too little too late.

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." as the old homily goes.

Shopping carts also should have a similar coating, but it costs too much, and might mean picking a few jewels off of the golden parachutes.

Insofar as ethanol for killing bacteria,I prefer to use the treatment internally, preferably made in Scotland.

So my advice is find an old silver coin, boil it to remove previous contamination, drop it in your water pitcher, grab a bottle of your favorite Scottish beverage, add a little of the silver treated water and perform the old Scottish remedy called "Two Hats".

Repeat as necessary.

Problem solved.

Call your next case!

Unfortunately he is not the only mentally ill person out there. It seems many others bought up supplies and tried to price gouge. I think it's a good thing that many online retailers have shut them down. The next step is to have the thieves return or distribute these health items for free and then see where it goes in court. Denying people the ability to fight the virus should have severe penalties.

I went to our local WalMart yesterday. There were NO baby wipes. My youngest is growing out of them, so no big deal. What are those with babies going to do? I like baby wipes over washcloths because thy are softer and have ingredients to help prevent diaper rash. Not to mention the extra water and electricity used to wash and dry a multitude of cloths. Days of rain, so no hanging out to dry.

If today's news is correct, a major well-known perfume manufacturer is already converting its production lines to manufacture hand sanitizer.

I didn't see any reference to that old standby, 190 proof Everclear. It can stand a small bit of dilution and still provide 60% alcohol. Comes in a nice 1.75 l bottle. Any remaining after preparing a sanitizer can be added to your favorite drink to help make isolation more enjoyable.

Just having a beer in the backyard by a nice fire as the sun is setting at 53F and now this!?

Good one.

A little more on topic. The sister in law sent over a bottle of ionized water with silver in it.

10 ppm if I remember correctly.

Nice looking bottle

Can't hurt, but what's it helping?

It's much like the coin in the barrel 911 mentioned. But what more?

An adult serving is a mere 3 tsp daily.
