Easy DIY Face Mask

04/04/2020 2:57 AM

Take a typical 20-inch x 20-inch bandana, placing it before you as a diamond.

Imagine the bottom-to-top corners as divided into 0-20-40-60-80-100%.

Fold the bottom up to 80%. Fold the top down to the former 20% point
There will be a projecting triangle; fold it back up to keep a straight line.

Take the left and right ends and tie them into a square knot with about 1-inch to 1.5-inch tails, depending on your head size.

Slip this over your head, adjusting for best coverage and tightness. If you wear glasses, they can push the mask in around the nose to make a decent seal. Or you can bend a wire to help out.

THANKS! Good info,good instructions.

I would like to mention the recent suggestion in another post #(200), to spray the mask with a solution of dissolved Epsom Salt, and regular table salt to kill viruses on contact.

Let the mask dry .

(Kosher salt would probably be better because of the additives in regular salt to prevent caking,et.)

The ratio is not mentioned, but I figure anything is better than nothing.

I heard something to that effect. I was wondering if it would cause irritation?

I'd seek further review of this technique before trying it.

These masks are essentially particle filters and my concern is that these salts may block the smallest openings that are most effective in filtering these micron sized particles.

The realization that we are in for a three month death spiral has not soaked in to many, even those at the HIGHEST levels of national, state and local governments. Party affiliations are not at play here. Just reality.

As said here more than once, at least a banana will keep us from touching our faces. I'm guilty of this.

Your wrong,... name one person that doesn’t believe it... just one.

and naming a person that’s trying to keep spirits up doesn’t count. (I had to say that because you’re the king that likes to bait with party affiliations)

Or course you are free to seek further review, meanwhile,I will be using mine when I go out.

Your argument is not logical.

I think that since they claim that regular cloth does not block the virus, the holes may become smaller when coated with salt, making them more effective,in addition to killing the viruses that do not get through the holes.

This lessens the possibility of spreading the virus when removing the mask.

You are free to exercise any method according to your opinion,as is everyone else.

To each his own!

I don't know why,but for some reason a Vonage commercial comes to mind: "Smart people sometimes do stupid things"

All kinds of people are graciously tolerated here.(I should know).

I would like to suggest that, instead of soaking the actual mask in your solution of dissolved salts (or some other solution of one's choice) that you instead soak a "folded paper towel" in the solution of choice and allow it to completely dry (and thus increasing its density). Once dried, it becomes a disposable filter that can be easily folded within the cloth mask and will avoid direct contact with one's face.

I say this with the thought that I'm unaware of any major problems in taking ones breath in through a "paper towel". I would appreciate others' thoughts on this.

Just sayin',

I suggested Spraying the mask with the solution, not soaking it.

This would leave a surface coating on the mask.

Yes,a paper towel is a finer mesh, but may be more difficult to breathe through.

Using shop towels was suggested in post #20

As I was saying;

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/01/170105160228.htm

Looks like someone else had the same idea, minus the Epsom salt.

The point of contact on the face could be masked off when treating the mask with salt.

Thanks for bringing that up, That’s been around for a while.

On the far baling hay, we did that when we worked in the hay mow, especially when the mow was filling up to the roof where it’s a tight space, no moving air and chaff.

My wife just ordered American made 3M N-95 masks from China. These are a part of a huge shipment recently shipped to China by the USA!

Interesting. The arms have no idea what the head is doing in this cluster!

They were not shipped by the government, but by private companies motivated by profit, with no other focus.

Most big businesses are truly psychopathic.

Lenin wrote, “When it comes time to hang the capitalists, they will vie with each other for the rope contract.”

Our government is trying to stop exporting masks and putting our needs first but is getting a lot of push-back from the press.

Especially considering that Canada supplies a LOT of the raw materials used for many things.

Just something like this gives the anti-American crowd (kind of comparable to Canada geese, they're far too noticeable and leave a mess for everyone else) more fuel and doesn't do any good in the long run.

I agree up to a point, but there are certain times when isolation is preferred and beneficial to all parties involved, such as the case during a pandemic.

World wide free trade is ideal as long as all parties play by the same rules of fairness and value.

Sometimes certain groups take advantage of others.

Remember,a continent was once bought with glass beads.

The one thing that is of equal value is a person's life.

One hour of any person's life is just as valuable as the next. The only way I see of true fairness is a universal minimum wage, but this will never happen:Too many dung beetles stealing the other's ball of dung or cheating him out of it.

We are, after all, simply riding on a dust mote in a sunbeam and our self importance is merely ego.

The entire Milky Way could disappear, and it would not make any difference in the large scheme of things.

Brings to mind a short poem :

I'm Nobody! Who are you?
Are you – Nobody – too?
Then there's a pair of us!
Don't tell! they'd advertise – you know!

How dreary – to be – Somebody!
How public – like a Frog –
To tell one's name – the livelong June –
To an admiring Bog!

How can one believe that?

They say on the one hand they don't work, then say they should be saved for the medical profession.Tell it straight. They either work or not.

Never expect the truth from any politician or political party.

Politicians are like pigeons:They will grovel at your feet and take food from your hand, but once they are above your head...well...you know what pigeons do best...

Now the consensus is to wear a cloth mask because even if it does not protect you from getting the virus,it protects others if you have the virus.

I guess it is better than sneezing or coughing into your elbow.

I have never heard that they don't work except for the defective ones from China. The CDC is not politicians. Yes wearing a mask is certainly better than sneezing into your elbow. Never once have I seen the medical establishment say to disinfect your elbow after you sneeze! And I'm sure that some of the sneeze will miss your elbow and go into the air. Be sure you don't elbow bump with the elbow you sneezed into.

Most on this forum seem pretty sensible about the Covid-19 pandemic. Meanwhile in the outside world there are those that seek some sort of absolute protection or safety from the virus. The reality, at least as I see it, is there are things you can do do reduce the chance of you contracting the virus, there are things you can do to reduce the chance of transmitting the virus. There are also things you can do to increase the chances of either.

Wearing a mask that makes you touch your face every minute or so? Who knows? Which way that pushes your chances is likely dependent on some other circumstances that you may or may not have control or even influence over.

Wearing a mask can offer a false sense of security, which in turn can lead to bad decisions on other actions that may increase exposure. And re-using a contaminated mask...

Staying home, maintaining distance, washing hands, sanitizing, and finally wearing an always clean mask all reduce the chances until you stop thinking and do something foolish.

My intention is not to "beat the virus" or "stop the virus" but to reduce exposure and to put off catching it for as long as I can. Hopefully mine will be a less serious case and again hopefully, the medical system will not be overburdened when I need it.

In the meantime the better I avoid the virus the less the chance I will pass it to anyone else, whether my family or a stranger I pass in the grocery store.

I read an article yesterday recommending using a shop towel (the paper towels you buy at Automotive parts stores) for a filter. They supposedly have a much tighter weave than most cotton fabrics.
This tiny company ran test for 3 micron sized particles on various readily available materials and the shop towels were very good filters. I cant seem to find the article today I saw it yesterday. Ill keep looking.

Here's another DIY method, albeit more work. My wife went to the $ store yesterday and bought $5 yoga pants and a packet of rubber band hair ties. Chopped the legs up and made us 8 masks. This is what you get staying at home with too much time on your hands:

BTW, she only used the legs. So we now have a pair of lycra/spandex camo Daisy Dukes size XXL on hand. If any of you could use them, get back to me today, otherwise they’re going up on Craigslist tomorrow.

Here is another simple way:Simply cut the end out of a plastic cup, stretch a shop towel over the cup, place the inverted cup over inlet after loading your pipe with diatomaceous earth and The Hotel California.

Just cant beat a water filter.

Warning:May increase appetite and enhance sense of humor.

Why not use the entire leg? Then you could simply pull up and cut of the contaminated part,or let it hang down in the back.

Besides, some people simply look better with the whole face covered, esp me...

I happen to agree with you on this. If this thing follows the Spanish influenza 1918 outbreak, we will be lucky to get through this with about 1.5 million deaths in the US by the time it's over. Anything less is due not so much to isolation protocols but to improved treatment and medical support capabilities. As to the flames, I think this thread perhaps is meriting some reporting for pure harassment.

We may not share politics or overall outlooks, but some degree of cordiality is never in bad form.

How did the wood drying project work out?

Thank you for asking. The boards were "stickered" (separated by 1/2 inch square wooden slats, and racked to dry.

My plan is to build an antique coffee grinder, some benches, and what not, out of this wood that grew in our back yard for 35 years.

Free Bikes For Kids has taken most of my time, until now, with the schools closed and my PD source of bikes locked down, it may be time to uncover the table saw.

I'll keep you posted, stay safe.

I recently did project using apple wood to make a swiveling bible holder for the altar at church. The apple wood came from a tree taken down on the church property and air dried for two years. To keep this ON-TOPIC, the bible holder did not have the 5G feature installed and as such did not generate any COVID 19 infections, although the highly virtuous purpose of the project may have spontaneously healed a few.

There was an article on NPR the other day. 2 Drs did their thesis on the genetics of the virus that caused the Spanish Flu outbreak of 1918. They even dug up bodies buried in the permafrost in Alaska to get samples of the 1918 version. Just recently they started testing todays CV-19. They basically found out the 1918 one and the CV-19 one are made up of the SAME genetics just slightly mutated.
If this is true then why is it so hard for them to devise a treatment and/or a vaccine. Did we not try to figure out a cure/vaccine for the 1918 version? It seems that would give us a very good start on the CV-19 cure.

WE didn't. I doubt if anyone here is that old. Flu mutates periodically. That's why the vaccine is not very effective. There is still no vaccine for aids. We can't wait for a vaccine before we go back to work. There needs to be a statistical analysis of the antibody tests done so far to see what percentage of Americans are immune.

I know flu vaccines are hit and miss because viruses mutate regularly. That is the reason we are told to get the flu shots every year. And I hope they find a vaccine or treatment for the CV-19 but even if they don't I completely agree with the going back to work part and the testing to see if you had it and are immune to the current version.

I think my wife and I had it way back in November. We were sick from before Thanksgiving till past Xmas. My wife was really bad. Test didn't show up as anything, but they treated her with the same medications they are currently treating the CV-19 patients. She almost got put on a respirator. I wasn't nearly that bad. We were told to stay home and avoid others as long as we had fever and we did.

No it’s not so much that,.., the type of flu that going to happen is an educated guess. And they make a vaccine for that. If that’s the strain, it works.

Why do you accept "insults?"

No one can insult me unless I allow it.

It is only words, composed of some very inconvenienced electrons and photons.

The Chinese have a saying:

"If you bring a gift to me and I refuse to accept it,to whom does it belong?"

They are famous for their double entendre.
