We will learn only if we listen to those trained and vetted in the appropriate field. Look again at your headline. Bill Gates is not trained, let alone vetted as an epidemiologist. Bill Gates is a very successful businessman. He listened to epidemiologists and tried to effectively spread the warning but he caught the public's ear because he made money. We listen to the wrong people for the wrong reasons.

He has contributed millions toward development of vaccines and is in constant contact with experts in the various fields.

I think he was and is well informed.

But no one in the positions to take action took him seriously.

Bill is not at fault, we are at fault. Your OP asked why we will never learn. We have not learned for generations.

There is also a fundamental paradox of putting in effort and money to prevent something from happening. After all that effort what do you have, nothing! What did you save, who knows?

As I implied earlier. Bill Gates does understand the situation by listening to those trained and vetted in the field of epidemiology. He is also nobly trying to use his limited pulpit to get the message out. But there are clearly people in power that refuse to listen.

Ask anybody, it's no mystery....Why worry about what might happen tomorrow, the list is endless, and besides I have enough to worry about with what's happening today....!

It's true in this day and age we have an endless list of 'what if' scenarios, we can't prepare properly for all of them, we can't even handle what's already happening...We can make plans for 'what if' scenarios, but that's about it....

Who can guess what "what if' scenario this structure is built for?

sure, being prepared is one thing,... going to the extremes of being prepared for everything that can possible happen is another. I’ll circle back to that..

of course when it does happen. There will be complainers, complaining ‘should have’.
