Hydraulic hose and flexible reinforcement wires

10/30/2007 11:32 AM

I'm looking for a special kind of reinforcement wire, flexible but still suitable for high-pressure applications (at least 1,000 bar). Reason I can't use normal steel or kevlar based armour are primarily that I break the wire when flattening the initially circular shape. I need a reinforcement wire that is flexible and will sustain high pressures when circular, but also manages to keep the wire intact when flattened. Thankful for any suitable help, e.g. material, companies or persons I should contact, Henrik

You don't say what kind of bending radius you'll need to sustain, but I'd look into spring steel (music wire). It is available in just about any diameter imaginable and has at least 220,000 psi tensile.

Thank you, Well, I need to flatten the hose altogether, not quite as much as a fire hose (when not filled with water), but in the radius area of 1/5 times the cable's diameter.

So, for example, a 1" OD hose would require the reinforcing wire to sustain a 0.20" bend radius? (Actually, it should experience slightly less on a 45 deg. lay, but we'll stay with 0.20" as worst case.) Using the 10d rule of thumb, you could use 0.020" diameter wire or smaller to avoid permanent deformation. I have heard of spring steel wire sustaining bend radii of as little as 1d without damage, however you will have exceeded the "spring" range of the material.

Hi!, Thanks for keeping a clear head in difficult times, at least in my point of view!, I'll will look into changing material (we use kevlar today) to a flexible steel wire and also make sure we use a small enough diameter, possibly making a third layer as we only use 2 today. I really appreciate your efforts helping me out, Sincerely yours, Henrik.

You can email bob bob@innovo.us he deals extensively with his hydraulics supplier and will be happy to get back to you on that.
