Adhesive for Bonding Styrofoam Sheets

10/31/2007 12:48 PM

Hello Everyone:

Is there any adhesive that will bond styrofoam sheets 1 x 2 x 4 (as an insulation) to garage door panels

Cheers,

Eben

Any construction adhesive might work (try a sample first).

'Great Stuff' might be another candidate.

I find that contact cement or solvents dissolve the styrofoam. Thanks anyway!

If you place the cement on the door and not the styrofoam and let it dry until tacky you should not have any problems. Most of the solvents have evaporated.

Stick it with cold wood glue (PVA glue) - that will bond well with the styrofoam. If it does not bond to the garage door, stick a thin layer of plywood to the styrofoam with the cold glue and then use hot glue or contact cement between the wood and the door (so it would be door - wood - foam). You could even use silicone sealer between the wood and the door.

Good luck

One of the the adhesive companies do a water based contact adhesive which is ok on Styrofoam, it might be Bostick but I'm not sure. It works well but it stinks whilst it's curing.

There sure are a lot of adhesives used to cement foam panels to garage doors. Your choice of solvents is very limited for styrofoam. Most any solventless, 100 % active solids, polyurethane adhesives and especially polyurethane hot melt adhesives are used to assemble motor homes, garage doors, etc. For one source, Go to:

I have also found that many glues/solvents will dissolve styrofoam. Not very technical but I have found that white school glue (like Elmers) will bond styrofoam without dissolving it. Maybe because its water based (like someone said)?

Thanks for your reply. I should also mention that the insulated garage door is driven by a garage door opener which opens and closes a few time daily. I have used PL300 (Buldog Grip). Eventually all the six styrofoam sheets fell off the garage door. I have used industial strength velcro hook and loop). So far so good.

One other option would be to lay in the insulation and then sheet over with very thin wood, metal or hard plastic and fasten to door with screws. Should give a nice clean look and protect your foam from damage. (I'm envisioning the segmented-type door where you could screw into the flange at the top and bottom of each segment. If you have an older, single panel door, you could build up the edges and do the same.)

If you use latex paint on the foam surface, your foam won't melt down with the solvent. Good Luck!

If you can stand the odor and the cleanup, epoxy works on styrofoam without melting the foam.

Liquid Nails makes an adhesive intended for "shower surrounds". Apparently these things are made of a material very similar to expanded polystyrene foam.

People who sell insulating foam also sell fixers which consist of a metal base with a spike attached. You fix the base to the surface with glue or screws or whatever then push the insulation onto the spikes & retain with push on fixes.

3M 77 or 90 spray adhesive is a favorite in the model aeroplane area. While the solvents used will attack the foam, if sprayed on from enough distance and in light coats, it works extremely well.

I've found that some adhesives will 'let go' in extreme temperature conditions.

In the case of a garage door, especially a metal one, some extreme temps can be expected. It would be a good idea to test a sample of the adhesive by gluing a piece of foam to a piece of metal (with the same finish, if any, as the garage door has) and freeze it and heat it to see if it holds.

But the foam is light enough that it shouldn't require a strong bond anyway.

Thanks dayhead! I have used Bulldog Grip 600 along with industrial strength hook & loop. Seems to be holding well so far. Thanks again!

Quality Aerosols makes a product called Q7200 in aerosol cans that is designed specifically for bonding EPS. Works well.

I have found the cure!!! Creative Crown a foam crown molding company has a modified

adhesive that will work on most any surface and will not damage foam.

Go to www.foamcrownmolding.com and look under the install kits. They sell the tubes

by themselves. It works! Good luck

Just a heads up. Styrofoam is extremely flammable and not recommended as a household insulation. If ignited it will go up like gasoline and quickly engulf everything in the garage. Choose wisely.
