Spring forwards.

Fall backwards. ['Fall' is an Americal word for 'Autumn'].

depends whether yo want to be 2 hours longer in bed or two hours late for something!

I just remember it by the fact that we move the clocks so as to make the problem WORSE!!! (In the evenings).

Those in the northern hemisphere will turn their clocks back (fall back).

Those in the southern hemisphere will turn their clocks forward (spring forward).

"Those in the northern hemisphere will turn their clocks back (fall back).
Those in the southern hemisphere will turn their clocks forward (spring forward)."

Where ever they are:
will turn their clocks back (fall back)& forward (spring forward).

Northerns or Southerns all have their OWN Spring & Fall.
Don't bring them in your "hemisphere", let them stay @ their OWN.

No one ever answered that question. Originally I asked, "Can't we just split the difference and cut this crap out?"

I guess not.

If I understand you correctly, you are saying that clocks run counterclockwise south of the equator.

No Sir!

What I mean is that in the South SEASONs ARE OPPOSITE IN YEAR to those in NORTH.

Their X-Mas is in Hottest [like our June]

When here is Spring it is Fall in South & viceVersa

When here we are advancing our clocks they are reversing their clocks

I have this grandfather clock which must never be turned back, only forward. So I have to turn the hands forward 23 hours to fall back, stopping every 15 minutes (not literally) to let the chimes adjust. So it's not always a trivial matter which way a clock should be turned, don't you see!

Another good point.

The dial can spring forward an hour fairly conveniently. Count the 4 pauses needed to do so, multiply that by the 11 pauses needed to spring the dial 11 hours forward so the time falls 1 hour backward....check another clock to see how long it takes....you get the idea!

"I have this grandfather clock which must never be turned back, only forward. So I have to turn the hands forward 23 hours to fall back, stopping every 15 minutes (not literally) to let the chimes adjust."

Just like the one I have. No problem in the spring to advance the time one hour manually.

"So it's not always a trivial matter which way a clock should be turned, don't you see!

"

In the fall it is simply a matter of stopping the clock for an hour. If you forget and don't start it right on time, adjust it forward to the correct time!

Simple solution for a simple problem.

Never forget that the official time change is to be done at 02:00 hours!

That's probably the key...but it takes some advance planning for falling back.

Sometime near fall back time, just let the clock run down. Wait until the fall back time and the clock dial coincide. Crank up the weights. Give the pendulum a boost. Back on schedule.

But oh,....there's the 'hunter's moon' dial to think about, too. Hmm?

Why don't you stop the Grandfather clock by holding the pendulum for a few seconds and re-start it 25 hours afterwords so you will have gone back 1 hour. This would be much easier than turning the clock hour by hour

Am I missing something? Is the grandfather's clock digital? Why 23 or 24 hours? The clock likely has a 12-hour dial face.

Hey, try this. Write the numbers 1-12 on sticky tape. Put the 12 over the 11. Put the 11 over the 10. Put the 10.... You get the idea? to make your eyes more familiar with the new locations just tilt the clock 30* clockwise. What was so friggen hard about that.

Perhaps it would just be easier to purchase another matching clock and set that one for the modified time schedule. Back to back on a lazy Susan. It could work.

Excellent point, Cardio07, Guess I got carried away. (And, you've already cut "12 hours" off my next clock resetting)

To everyone, thanks for the "timely" tips. My clock has crank-up weights--one each for clock movement, 1/4-1/2-hour strike, and any of the three selectable chime tunes. So I'm not sure about stalling the weights--I would guess this is the way those clocks with a stop feature work. Another way might be to stop the pendulum--maybe remove the weights from their cables as well. I wonder...?

Hi tubenut, Turning the clocks back in the autumn (fall USA) originated during the Last war (WWII). This was to give the farmers in the northern hemisphere more daylight in the mornings. Spencer.

Actually, I think the idea was first put forth by Ben Franklin way back when - and if I remember, it was to provide more daylight at the END of the day for agricultural purposes. It is an odd thing, now it's voiced as an energy saving process somehow, and adhesion to it is somewhat slipshod in parts of America..

The extra hour of daylight could burn the crops. I know there is one less hour in the morning, but everyone knows the afternoon sun is hotter

What crops do you know of that do not observe daylight saving time? In Florida there are severe penalties for any plants that fail to comply.

Turning the clocks forward or back DOES NOT CHANGE THE NUMBER OF HOURS THE SUN SHINES ON THE CROPS.

The whole idea is to regulate hours of daylight for those who follow the clock.

It is akin to the indian who cut one foot off his blanket and sewed it on the other end, to make the blanket longer.

Yes. After reading the Wiki entry it makes a lot more sense (well, as much as DST does anyway..) - Not sure where I got the idea that Franklin came up with it, probably some schoolbook story from my dim past.
